The BJP has been critical of Thakur for not inviting Yediyurappa to form the government. According to sources, the Governor has outlined the chronology of events since the fall of the JDS-BJP Government headed by H D Kumaraswamy. The various antics adopted by the BJP to pressurise the Governor for inviting it to form government, besides the opinion of legal and constitutional experts on the BJP's claim to form the government, have been mentioned in Thakur's report. Newspaper cuttings and Congress letters to the Governor, have also been appended to the report. Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan has said that a BJP-JD(S) coalition would be "inherently unstable." It is an "unnatural alliance," which was a "complete perversion and subversion of the Constitutional process," she added. BJP, JD (S) parade 129 MLAs before Karnataka Governor
Monday, October 29, 2007
MP: Bangalore, Oct 29 (ANI): A day after a senior JD (S) leader revolted against his party and cast a shadow on the formation of the next BJP-led coalition in the State, both the BJP and the JD (S) paraded 129 MLAs in front of Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur today.B S Yediyurappa has been elected leader of the BJP-JD(S) joint legislature party. At the BJP headquarters in Delhi, the party expressed hope that the Governor will invite them to form the government. On the other hand, the Congress party has asked the Centre to dissolve the Assembly. Leaders of both political parties have already submitted letters of support to the Governor in favour of former Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to head the next coalition in the State. The BJP leaders had also urged the Governor to request President Pratibha Patil to discontinue the President's rule in the State, after JD (S) leader H D Kumaraswamy made a turnabout and decided to support the BJP within a month after both parties parted away from each other. On Sunday, another dramatic moment came in the fluid political situation in the State, when former Deputy Chief Minister M P Prakash turned against his party's decision to back the BJP. Prakash, who revolted against the party supremo H D Deve Gowda, said that the support letter submitted by the JD (S) leadership to the Governor in support of the formation of the BJP-led government is "invalid and illegal". He alleged that the JD (S) legislative party meeting was not held before former Kumaraswamy submitted the support letter to the Governor. A powerful Lingayat leader, Prakash had played the role of his party's points-man for talks with the Congress in recent weeks, and is reportedly miffed over by the sudden decision taken by Kumaraswamy to realign with the BJP after a bitter public fallout with the saffron party. He claims that he has the support of 31 JD (S) MLAs. The sudden turmoil in the JD (S) had led Kumaraswamy to send his 40 legislators to a resort to prevent them from being 'poached' by the Congress. In the present State Assembly, which has been kept under suspended animation, the BJP has highest number of legislators with 79 MLAs, followed by the Congress with 65 MLAs, which excludes the eight other members led by former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who broke away from the JD (S) to join the Congress. Kumaraswamy led JD (S) has officially 57 members in the legislature, but its strength is down to 48 after Siddaramaiah's defection. The smaller parties and independents only add to 17 in the 224-member Assembly. The Congress, which has second largest number of MLAs after the BJP, is closely watching the evolving situation. Kumaraswamy had blamed the Congress for engineering a split in his party that led him to join hands with the BJP. The coalition government led by Kumaraswamy fell last month after the BJP withdrew support, accusing the JD (S) of going back on its word to hand over reigns of power as part of a deal. Janata Dal-Secular to prepare for polls:Devegowda
Sunday, October 28, 2007
Bangalore, Oct.25 (ANI): Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) President and former Prime Minister H.D.Devegowda today announced that his party would seek a fresh mandate from the peoplein the wake of the Congress backing off from a coalition tie-up for government formation. "With the Congress bringing the curtains down on government formation, the only course left for us is to gear up for elections," Devegowda told reporters here."BJP has already annnounced that it will face elections. The Congress has pulled the curtain down on government formation. We are the only third party left in the state. We should keep these developments in mind and go ahead strengthening and preparing the party for elections," Devegowda said."The question of waiting for a call by the Congress for an invitation to form the government does not arise at all now. The Congress has its own right to reject any offer. Where is the question of being humiliated?," he shot back while answering a query.Senior JD(S) leaders met here on Thursday and announced a decision in favour of elections, he said.Devegowda said the list of contesting candidates would be announced by November 15.Gowda, who began the exercise of restructuring district units and sorting out differences among partymen on Thursday with a meeting with districts units of Uttara Kannada and Dharwad, said he would complete it by November 1. He also announced that he would be launching a statewide electioneering campaign from November 2. He expressed confidence about the party putting up a good show in the upcoming elections, drawing inspiration from the JD-S' performance in the recent urban local bodies polls. When his attention was drawn to the state assembly being kept under suspended animation, he said "it is the responsibility of the Governor Rameshwar Thakur to dissolve the House and facilitate seeking fresh mandate from people."He, however, defended the Delhi mission undertaken by former state Home Minister M P Prakash, remarking it was done in consonance with the opinion expressed by MLAs to explore the possibility of forming a government with the Congress. The BJP has accused its former coalition partner JDS of trying to create confusion in the minds of people on formation of another government in the state with Congress' support."There is no possibility of formation of a government in Karnataka. JDS is trying to create confusion in the minds of people", former deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa told reporters while reacting to the attempts being made by JDS to lure Congress. He questioned Governor Thakur's decision not invite the BJP to form the government after H D Kumaraswamy Government had resigned.Ruling out revival of ties with JDS, Yediyurappa said there was no need for any discussion with that party and BJP was ready for polls.
