Bangalore to go unwired with WiMax Tuesday, October 31, 2006 | MP
Hi tech city Bangalore is all set to go unwired with the WiMax technology. Karnataka government has already taken the initiative under the 'Bangalore Unwired' project to provide citywide broadband wireless access. The project is aimed to make Bangalorethe first in India to have a seamless wireless broadband connectivity any time, any place and accessible to all at affordable costs, said Karnataka Chief Minister.
5 Satellite cities to decongest Bangalore Sunday, October 29, 2006 | MP
In an effort to decongest the State's capital city, the State govt has proposed to build five satellite cities around Bangalore. Karnataka Chief Minister said that the five sector specific cities around Bangalore would be integrated with townships consisting of commercial, residential, shopping, entertainment and schooling sub-sectors to decongest the traffic in the city and therby attract more investments to the State.
Govt calls for common CET Thursday, October 26, 2006 | MP
The Karnataka Government has proposed for a common entrance test for admissions for professional courses in all colleges including government as well as private and aided colleges. The proposal if approved is being considered for next year onwards. The move is expected to ease the admission processes for students seeking admissions to various colleges in the state including the management colleges. At present the management conducts seperate CEts for their admission process.
Kannada vernacular search engine launched Wednesday, October 25, 2006 | MP
A new website interface, named Bhramara that offers search engine in Kannada-Hindi-English Bhramara has been launched in Bangalore. Bhramara focus on vernacular characters and makes it simpler for searching in local Indian languages with the support of a software keypad that allows vernacular text input with a standard keyboard. These interfaces use Unicode font and work on Windows and Linux, and is also planning to come out with more vernacular interfaces in the future.

India's premier IT event, Bangalore IT.in 2006 will be held from October 28th at the Palace Grounds, Bangalore. Hubli music launched Sunday, October 22, 2006 | MP
The music of Kannada film, Hubli starring Sudeep and Rakshita has been released. The film directed by Om Prakash is said to be an action thriller. Hemanth scores the music for the film which is said to have 6 songs. The audio release was held at a simple function at Green House restaurant by producer Gangadhar.
JDS-BJP rule is on verge of collapse: Cong Saturday, October 21, 2006 | MP
Opposition party Congress has claimed that the ruling govt JDS-BJP Government's state in Karnataka was on a verge of collapse. Opposition Leader N Dharam Singh said that the coalition govt was undergoing several differences over the recent communal riots that rocked Mangalore. "While the BJP demands a judicial probe, JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda declares that the state Corps of Detectives probe is enough," said Singh.
Cong MLC survives gun attack Friday, October 20, 2006 | MP
The condition of Congress legislator Prabhakar Kore who was allegedly shot by his nephew is said to be out of danger. Kore was attacked by his nephew who fired three bullets at his uncle over some arguments on family property disputes. He was immediately taken to the hospital and underwent an emergency operation by a team of doctors who safely removed the bullets. Doctors say that his condition is stable. Kore is a member of the Karnataka legislative council and a veteran Congress leader from north Karnataka.

The State's cultural festival, Kittur Utsav 2006 will go on October 23, 24th. The State government has also decided to celebrate the festival in an elaborate way this year similar to that of the Hampi Utsav. Besides various cultural and art events being organised at the Kittur fort surroundings, the state govt has also earmarked Rs 1.5 crore for rennovating and developing the historic important places like the fort, palace of Rani Chennamma at Kittur and improving the museum and premises.
Actress Meera Jasmine returns to Kannada Wednesday, October 18, 2006 | MP
Malayali actress Meera Jasmine who made her debut in Kannada film, Mourya was away from the Kannada industry for a while. But meantime she was busy acting in other South Indian languages including Tamil, Telungu and Malayalam. Now she is making a comeback to Kannada films with Arasu. Meera who co-starred with Puneet Rajkumar in Mourya will be pairing opposite Puneeth again in the film. Ramya will play the other female lead role.
Power tariffs slashed except for Blore Metro Tuesday, October 17, 2006 | MP
The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has announced a slash in the power tariffs across the state. However Bangalore Metropolitian region has been barred from the price cuts. Rates will go down by 10 to as much as 20 paise per unit. The new tariffs will come into effect from Nov 1st, coinciding with the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations. The move is also seen as an encouragement for industries to move out of Bangalore and relocate to other parts of the State.

Raghavendra the younger son, of veteran actor late Rajkumar is foraying into direction from acting. The star is seriously considering on directing a film under his family's home productions. And with all the support from his friends and others he assures that he would come forward with a film atleast in a years time. President A P J Abdul Kalam who is on a 2 day visit to Karnataka had the rare oppurtunity to celebrate his birthday in a rather unique way. Kalam who turned 75 on Sunday celebrated his birthday with the children of Spastic Society of India in Bangalore. He was joined by the Karnataka Goveorner and Chief Minister. He later also visited a remote tribal village in Karnataka who was greeted by the children and villagers there and joined in their celebrations.

The much acclaimed Girish Kasaravalli's latest Kannada film and this year State's best film award winner, Nayi Neralu has been chosen to take part in as many as 6 international film festivals. The film themed on socio-cultural and religious aspects is the adaptation of S.L. Bhyrappa's novel by the same name. The film which was already screened at Osian fest is now being selected to Asian Cinema festival, Karachi film fest, Palm Springs International film festival at US, Bangkok festival and Rotardam film festival etc.
Govt set for Janapada Jaathre Friday, October 13, 2006 | MP
'Janapada Jatre', a new programme meant to revive the various cultural fork art forms of the State will be launched in Bangalore and other districts in the State on October 14th. Of the 180 different art forms Karnataka has, 70 had been shortlisted and will be showcased under the Janapade Jaatre. As a part of the cultural events being organised by the State govt, artists will perform the events in front of the Vidhan Soudha and Lalbagh premises and also on district headquartes on special days.
Mlore-Hassan 4 lane highway sought Thursday, October 12, 2006 | MP
Karnataka government has proposed for a 4 lane highway connecting Mangalore and Hassan. The project propsal on this regard has been sent to the Center on this regard which is estimated at a cost of Rs 100 crore. This was informed by the State Public Works Minister. However the Center has agreed only Rs 7 crore for the purpose and meanwhile the State Government is planning to take up the project based on Build-Own-Operate Transfer system.
Karnataka gets 8 SEZs Wednesday, October 11, 2006 | MP
The Center govt has approved 26 new Special Economic Zones(SEZ) of which Karnataka was given nod for 8 SEZs.The Board of Approval (BoA) has given the formal approvals to these proposals. Karnataka bagged the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board(KIADB) to set up SEZs for food processing, biotech, pahrma and chemical sectors in Hassan. The proposal for biotechnology sector at Electronic City in Bangalore also got the clearance. 4 SEZs for IT sector also had been approved.

'Sirivanta' directed by S Narayan is the remake of Telugu movie 'Aa Nalaguru'. The film stands out fresh in its own style of story narration and serves as a good entertainer. Vishnuvardhan as the idealistic man who stands for his principles makes a commendable performance. So is actress Shruti who is a perfect match opposite Vishnu. The rest of the cast also gives a strong support to the story. Though the film has its own flaws, overall it excels with good screenplay and fares as well in other departments like music and camera.
New city names from Nov 1 Monday, October 9, 2006 | MP
Bangalore and rest of the Karnataka cities are to get their original Kannada version of names from this November 1st. Besides the capital city Bangalore being renamed to Bengaluru, the other cities in the list include Mysore, Mangalore, Belgaum, Shimoga, Hospet etc which will be known as Mysuru, Mangaluru, Belgavi, Shivamogga, Hosapete respectively. The Department of Kannada and Culture is preparing the list on this regard and the new names will come into force on Nov 1st coincinding with the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations.
New postal stamp to mark Suvarna Karnataka Monday, October 9, 2006 | MP
As a part of the State's Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, the govt has decided to release a new Rs 5 postal satmp. The Center has given its approval on this regard and the Department of Posts will be issuing the stamp on Nov 1st to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of Karnataka. The Kannada and Culture Department have given some designs for the new stamp and the Postal Department would choose one among them.
English to be made compulsory from Std I Saturday, October 7, 2006 | MP
Karnataka government has announced that English will be made a compulsory subject in all the State Schools from Std I onwards from the next academic year. "All schools, government and private, will impart English from first standard from June 2007," stated Minister for Primary and Secondary Education. The decison on this regard was taken after a joint cabinet meeting. At the same time the govt is proposing a three language formulae by which Kannada language too will be taught in English medium schools.

Kannada actor cum director V.Ravichandran is thinking of a dream project, Naa in which he plans to don seven different roles. He is determined to do the project but wants to wait for a while before he takes up the project which he admits is not going to be an easy one. Bandh incur heavy losses on IT industry Thursday, October 5, 2006 | MP
The Karnataka Bandh had incurred heavy losses on the IT industry with most of the IT firms in the State shut down following the bandh call.The IT and BPO sectors is expected to have suffered a loss of upto Rs 200 crore by the day long strike. To compensate for the losses, many of the IT companies have decided to work on an alternate day. Normal life was hit by the satate wide bandh which was called by pro kannada organisations in view of the Belgaum's dispute on the boundary row.However the bandh seemed to be peaceful in most areas across the state.
Air India Express starts Mlore-Dubai flights Wednesday, October 4, 2006 | MP
Budget arliner, Air India Express has started operations of flights between Mangalore and Dubai sectors with its inaugural flight service on Oct 3rd. There would be three weekly flights to Dubai on Monday, Thursday and Saturday with effect from Oct 5th. The Dubai flight would reach Mangalore at 6pm and would return to Dubai at 9pm. The airline is also said to be offering special introductory fares for a limited period.

The Kannada films producers association has recently come up with a silent protest by deciding not to produce any new Kannada films for another one year from Sept 30th. The Producers' Association claims that the industry had incurred a loss of over Rs 60 crore since this year. The rental and service charges rates along with the piracy issues are all seen as factors that add to the producers woes.
Colorful finale to Mysore Dussera Tuesday, October 3, 2006 | MP
The world renowned Mysore Dussera festival ended with a spectaclar procession and traditional events that took . The 10 day event concluded with the jumbo safari being the major attraction along with colourful parades that showcased the rich culture and heritage of Karnataka. Thousands of people thronged the city premises to witness the grand finale including hundreds of foreign tourists which concluded in a torchlight parade after the sunset amid a 21-gun salute at the Banni Mantap grounds.
Dr Malati Das takes over as new Chief Secretary Sunday, October 1, 2006 | MP
Dr Malati Das who served as the additional chief secretary(CS) of Karnataka has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of the State. Ms Das, a 1970 batch IAS officer has taken over charge from outgoing CS, B K Das. She who hails from Udupi is the second woman CS of the state, but the first Kannadiga woman from the State to occupy the coveted post. Malati who also has an MA and Ph D in Political Science has served in several govt departments.
