Digital Tulu Film from Mumbai
Tuesday, October 25, 2005 | MP

Ramchandra PN
Mumbai
--------
Aaroor Pattabi, Vishu Kumar, K.N. Taylor, Ram Shetty, Sadashiv Salian- these are some of the names of Directors, Producers and actors that flash into our mind when one mentions Tulu films. Around thirty years back, there were times when a Tulu film was released in Mangalore and Udupi every year. Top names form the film industry like Kalpana, Leelavathi, Kishori Ballal and even top stunt master from Mumbai film industry, Fighter Shetty were involved in Tulu films. Koti Chennayya, Bangarada Patler, Bhagyavanthadi are some of the films that enthralled the Tulu audience over the years. But sadly over the past few years not Tulu film has been released. A couple of films have been made; have not seen the light of the day. The one time regular producers complain for a lack of market for Tulu films. On top of it, TV has eaten a lot into the cinema audience. There are many top Tuluva Kannadigas working at top level in the Film Industries, both in Bangalore and Mumbai - a few even in Chennai. But none of them off late have ventured to make and release a film in thier own language, economics is sited as the main reason.

Three Tuluva Kannadigas in Mumbai have now ventured to beat the system in its own den. They have ventured into the making of a Tulu feature film and to cut down on the economic risks, they are going digital. With the advent of the digital tecnology, filmmaking has become more accessable and affordable. It has revolutionised the way the films are being distributed. With a simple LCD projection, films can now be shown in every small or big hall in remote areas - or even in backyards of houses in villages.

Suddha is produced by three Mumbai Tuluva kannadigas Mohan Marnad, Surendra Kumar and Ramchandra P N. It has been directed by Ramchandra PN, a graduate of the Film and TV Institute of India, Poona. Suddha is his first feature length film. Both Mohan Marnad and Surendra Kumar are ameture drama artists and are working in the Kannada dubbing industry in Mumbai for the last ten to fifteen years. The three of them together plan to develop an alternative system of digital movie distribution and take their film to the audience.

Suddha is the first ever Tulu language film shot on the digital format. The 105 minutes film was shot in 2004 in a village called Marnad near Mangalore, Karnataka and got completed in 2005. The film is an adaptation of the 'Tulu Sahitya Academy' award winning Tulu play called 'Bojja' written by Mumbai based playwright, Narayana Nandalike.

Suddha depicts the death of the feudal system that existed among the Tulu speaking community in coastal Karnataka and the impact the land ceiling act, ushered during the sixties and seventies, has had on its social structure. It is the story of modern India - of changing caste equations and a realization of the reality among the land owning class, albeit a bit late. Though the film is set in a remote village near Mangalore, it could well have happened in any other village elsewhere in India. The film was shot on the digital video format. It took seventeen days to shoot the film. There was only one location used. Local artists, available lights, no make up, available properties, available costumes and location sound are the other hallmark of this shooting. Besides me, the crew consisted of my associate cum executive producer, my cameraman and my sound recordist. By turns we were doubling up as boom men, light boys, spot boys, location managers apart from fulfiling our own assigned responsibilities. FTII trained graduates Sameer Mahajan and Santosh Kumar have done the camera and sound work respectivly.

Starring: Subash Padiwaal, Boja Shetty, Mohandas, Sharada Devi, Sujata Mudradi, Saikrishna Kudla, Aasha Marnad etc.
Original Tulu play: 'Bojja' by Narayan Nandalike
Camera: Sameer Mahajan

Swamy
Sunday, October 2, 2005 | MP

This movie has nothing much to offer than showing the struggle of an honest police officer in a corrupt society. Dharsan as Swamy the intelligent officer is at his best while Avinash as the influential Desai puts up a good performance. Cast also includes Gayatri Jayaram, Sriraksha, Rangayana Raghu, Shobhraj and Jaigadish. Gurukiran’s music is just okay. Directed by M S Ramesh, the film is certain to entertain the Darshan fans with its action packed scenes and catchy dialogues.
