Hassan medical college gets govt nod Saturday, September 30, 2006 | MP
After Mandya and Belgaum,Union Health Ministry has given green signal for setting up a nother government medical college at Hassan in Karnataka. The college,Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) has been granted permission to begin the college in this academic year. Councelling for admissions is being held on Sept 30th and the college would also intake outstation students.
Derecognised schools allowed for this year Friday, September 29, 2006 | MP
Karnataka government has given a relaxation to the recent order to close down all derecognised schools operating in the State. What comes as a relief to lakhs of students attending these schools, the govt has allowed these schools to continue with the education till the end of this academic year so as to avoid the inconvenience caused to students by closing down of schools in the middle of the year. However the govt made it clear that these schools will remain as derecognised and it would not revoke its decision on withdrawal of regonition as these schools were carrying out education in English medium instead of the govt's order to impart education in Kannada medium.
Belgaum to be Karnataka's second capital Wednesday, September 27, 2006 | MP
The Karnataka government is making poposal to call upon Belgaum as its second capital of the State. Belgaum would remain as an integral part of Karnataka and we are committed to develop the North Karnataka region,said the CM on the sidelines of the ongoing assembly session that is being held in Belgaum. A state secretariat is also being proposed for Belgaum. This comes in the wake of the ongoing State's boundary disputes with Maharastra and the decison to hold the session itself was a clear indication to bring out the state's unified stance on the issue.

Neelakanta is the Kannada film in the making by director Sai Prakash. The film is being produced by Bala Muttayya. Ravichandran plays the hero in the film. Tamil actress and glamorous girl Namitha is pairing with him in the film which will be her first Kannada movie. Besides acting, Ravichandran is also said to be doing direction and music for the film.
Belgaum holds historic Assembly session Monday, September 25, 2006 | MP
Belgaum for the first time is holding the Assembly session of State legislature. The 5 day long session which started on Monday will have the border disputes in its prime agenda. While Maharastra has sought the SC for reopening on the border issues the Karnataka govt is trying its best to make sure that Belgaum remains the part of the state and to implement the Mahajan report that maintained that Belgaum as an integral part of Karnataka.
Colorful start to 10 day long Mysore Dasara Sunday, September 24, 2006 | MP
The 10 day long grand Dasara festivities kicked off with a colorful start atop the Chamundesri Hills in Mysore on Saturday. A special puja and light lamping was performed at the temple premises while the scion of the Mysore royal family ascended the royal throne at the durbar hall at the Mysore palace.This festival is annually being conducted as "Nadda Habba" in the state which include many cultural and art and sport events that attracts many tourists from India and abroad.
Jaggesh denies State award Saturday, September 23, 2006 | MP
Kannada actor Jaggesh who was won this years State award for best supporting actor has denied the award. The actor was chosen for the award for his performance in the film, 'Mata'. But the actor felt that the award was not to his grade as he played the hero in the film and not in a supporting role. " It is like demoting me from the stature of a hero. This is unacceptable to me.I am humbly rejecting it" , said Jaggesh.

S Narayan is making a film that would deal the sentimental relations between a mother and a son in his upcoming film, Taayiya Madilu. Actor Shivaraj Kumar plays the dotting son while Telungu actress Jayasudha plays his mom. Also actress Rakshita is pairing up with Shivaraj Kumar for the first time in her career with this film.Shivanna had acted in many a family films as the caring brother will now turn a responsible son. And the director promises that the film would be quite different from the usual emotional family stories.
1400 derecognised schools asked to close down Thursday, September 21, 2006 | MP
Karnataka government had asked for the closure of 1400 schools across the state on the issue of derecognition following allegedly violating the language policy. These schools were allowed to operate on the condition that the medium of teaching should be the local Kannada language up to the primary level.But against the rules,these schools were using English as the medium of instruction. The schools claim that they had to offer English medium owing to pressure from parents of children studying in these schools.Meanwhile, the Karnataka Unaided Schools Management Association is even planning to move the court and get a stay on the government’s order.
State Awards: Naayi Nelaru Best film Wednesday, September 20, 2006 | MP
Renowned Kannada filmmaker Girish Kasarvalli's film Nayi Neralu has won this year's State's Best Film award. The film based on S L Byrappa's novel by the same name has won Kasarvalli the best director award for the year. The best actor award went to Shivarjkumar for Jogi while Pavitra Lokesh won the best actress award for her performance in Nayi Neralu. Ratnaja's Nenaperali was chosen as the second best film while Amruthadhare came in the third spot.Jayanthi won Dr. Rajkumar award while Puttana Kanagal Award went to V Ravichandran. Others include Hamsalekha (Music director),Jaggesh for supporing actor, Arundati Nag for supporting actress, playback singers,- Ashwath, H G Chaitra.
Zee Kannada calls for young musical talents Tuesday, September 19, 2006 | MP
Zee Kannada television channel is calling for young and aspiring musical talents to participate in the channel's musical programme 'Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa'. The programme is similar in tunes with Zee Tv's Hindi version of 'Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa' challenge. The music talent show will beanchored by popular music director Rajesh Krishnan and will have singers like Raju Anantha Swamy and Rathnamala Prakash among the judges. The audition for the show will be held in four zones in Karnataka with 2 centers in each zone. The centers will be Mysore, Hassan, Shimoga, Davanagere, Raichur, Hubli, Mangalore and Bangalore.
US team to visit State for investment options Monday, September 18, 2006 | MP
A delegation of US trade leaders will be visiting Karnataka to assess on the investment options in the state. The visit is seen in response to the high level delgation tour led by the Deputy CM which visited US recently which held various business meetings with investors in the US. The state is also seeking investment proposals of over Rs. 2,000 crore to be finalised soon. The state is also planning to appoint NRIs as ambassadors of industry whom will represent Karnataka and would promote investment in the State.

The concept of homestays to serve the visiting tourists is gaining popularity in Mysore these days. With the countdown already started for Dasara celebrations, the State Tourism Dept is also aggressively promoting the home stay facility which is being offered by the local home owners providing quality accomodation at homes at reasonable rates. The Dasara rush often causes a shortage of rooms and to overcome this the Tourism Dept is calling for more locals to open the doors for the tourists which would also give them an oppurtunity to earn some extra income with a little hospitality.

After Zee Kannada, couple of Kannada channels are awaiting its launches in the coming months. One is the TV9 news channel which is planning to begin its Kannada channel by early October. The channel is already making test runs and is promoting itself as the Kannadigas's national channel.The other channel likely to be launched later this year is Kannada kasturi, a mix of inforrmation and entertainment channel from the Kasturi Media Pvt Ltd (KMPL) in Bangalore.

Various Kannada organisations has called on for a Karnataka bandh in protest to the Center's decision for not supporting on the State's boundary issues with Maharastra.The bandh will be to draw Center's attention towards the State's demand to resolve the border dispute and a decison on this was taken after a meeting of the kannada organisations in Bangalore.The bandh being supported by Kannada activists is to be observed on September 30th.

Kannada film, Cyanide that is based on the story of the assasination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is now being remade into Tamil by director A M Ramesh.The movie revolves around the pschological aspects of the main suspects involved in the plot.The director also plans to make the Hindi version of the film with Ram Gopal Varma with Amitabh Bachchan, Nana Patekar, Tabu in the lead roles.

Karnataka govt has made singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in educational institutions. The singing of the song will be made compulsory in schools and colleges to mark the centenary celebrations of the national song.Though there would be no strict enforcement and no schools will be punished if they do not follow the rule, said Primary and Secondary Education Minister.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi who was in Bangalore has promised that the UPA government would soon release a special finanacial package for Karnataka to cope with the relief works in the flood and drought hit regions in the State.She also dismissed allegation that the Center was being inattentive to Karnataka's problems. "The UPA Government never discriminated against states facing distress while extending financial support. The allegation made by the state government in this regard is baseless and unfounded",said Ms Gandhi while addressing a massive rally in Bangalore.

Odahuttidavalu is the Kannada remake of Cheran's Tamil hit, Porkalam.The film tells a sentimental story between a brother and sister relationship. Ravichandran as the hero puts up a goodperformance. Mallika as the mute sister is impressive. Radhika and Rakshita play the other leading roles quite glamerously. Overall the film excels with some good music and director Saiprakash has succeeded in keeping the essence of the story with its emotional content but well within its limits.
State Govt to adopt 1,000 villages every year Friday, September 1, 2006 | MP
Karnataka Chief Minister has said that the government would adopt 1000 villages in the ststae every year to promote development activities of these villages. The govt would focus on improving facilities like providing sanitation, drinking water, and roads. This would be implemented in different phases and proper planning need to be done, said the CM. The programme will be launched on Nov 1st coinciding with the celebrations of Karnataka's 50 years of formation.
