Rs 250 cr immediate relief for State

The Center government has announced a financial package of Rs 250 crore to Karnataka as an immediate relief to meet with the recent flood situation in the state.This was informed by the Union Home Minister after conducting ariel survey of the flood hit areas like Bidar, Belgaum, Bagalkote, Bijapur and Gulbarga districts. The Minister also assured that more funds if required will be offered in the future to meet with the situation.

Ace billiards and snooker champion Pankaj Advani was conferred with the the highest individual sporting honour in the country,the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for 2005. The Award was presented by President Abdul Kalam at the Darbar Hall in Rashtrapati Bhavan at New Delhi on Tuesday.Advani who hails from Bangalore said that he was excited to recieve the prestigious award. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs, a scroll of honour and a medal.

Helmet rule further delayed to Oct1

The State government has again further delayed the helmet rule that makes helmet cumpulsory for two wheeler riders and pillion riders. The implemetation of the rule is now further extended to Oct 1st, said chief Minister. This in view with the govt's decision to file a review petition in the High Court to clear on the clauses relating to the enforcement of the rule.

102 taluks in State declared as as drought-hit

The State Cabinet has declared 102 taluks in Karnataka as drought-hit areas due to defecit of rains over the mansoon season. These taluks have been identified inorder to make them eligible for relief funds.Government will be assessing on the sitauion based on data recieved from the representatives of these taluks and funds will be released as early as possible to overcome the crisis.

The State government is hoping to make Bangalore to be a totally wireless broadband connected city within a year's time.This was stated by the Principal Secretary to Govt– IT & Biotechnology during a function.Proposals for this mega project is underway and pilot tests are being conducted in major Bangalore's govt offices and IT parks. The new network intend to be platform independent so as to be made compatible with future technologies. He also informed that State would also hold a technology event on the nanotechnology, Bangalore Nano similar in lines with the bangalore it.com.

Konkani seriel on Pap Aani Shirap from Oct

Doordarshan's Chandana channel will be airing a mega serial based on the popular 'Paap Aani Shirap,' a novel by renowned Konkani writer Victor Rodrigues Anjelor. Mangalore Telefilms is producing the serial which will be its first Konkani TV Mega Serial.Titled 'Kani Aashi Mogachi, the seriel is widely shot in locales of Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, Goa and Chikmagalur. The serial will go on air from Oct 14th and will be shown on Saturday and Sunday between 10.30 pm and 11 pm in around 250 episodes.

State asks Kalam's support for flood relief aid

Karnataka government had sought President Abdul Kalam’s intervention for immediate release of fund from the Center for the flood relief. In a petition submitted to the President, the State govt has demanded that Rs 100 crore should be granted to Karnataka as an interim relief as the Center has extended to other flood hit states like AP and Maharastra before assessing on the situation. Karnataka Chief Minister has said that the state was financially in a difficult situation to deal with the crisis and informed that it had sought Central assistance of Rs 906.72 crore towards flood relief and Rs 500 crore for the drought relief works.

Prez to dedicate Upper Krishna project to nation

Central team to assess on flood situation

With the Karnataka government's appeal for flood relief, a team from the Center will be heading to the State to visit the flood hit regions and assess on the situation. The team will be visiting the worst flood affected regions like Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur and Uttara Kannada districts. Over 50,000 people are said to have been displaced in the northern districts of the state.

Helmet rule is being made cumpulsory for 2 wheeler riders from Sept 1st. The order was issued with a State government notification. The helmet rule which was supposed to come into effect from August 1st was postponed for a later date to give enough time for the people to buy helmets. There was also a huge public demand to exempt pillion riders from exempting the helmet rule. And it is learnt that the rule may be most likely be relaxed for the pillion riders.

CM urges Center to resolve border disputes

Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy has asked the Center to put an end to all the inter state border disputes. Kumaraswamy was speaking on this in his Independence Day address. He said that Karnataka's border issue with Maharashtra was a closed chapter as far as Karnataka was concerned and also added that the State was in favor of the Mahajan Commission report which rightfully observed that Belgaum belonged to Karnataka. The CM also said that the State would hold World Kannada Meet at Belgaum as part of the 50th year celebrations of the state formation.

New tax saving schemes from Karnataka Bank

Karnataka Bank has introduced two new tax saving term deposit schemes that would give high returns and tax exemption under Section 80 (C) of the Income Tax Act. The new schemes are KBL tax planner (FD) and KBL tax planner (ACC).KBL tax planner (FD) offers simple interest while the KBL tax planner (ACC) offers compound interest under the reinvestment plan.The tax shall be deducted at source on the amount of interest paid as per the IT Act.The scheme offers an attractive rate of interest of 8% with annual yield of 9.72 per cent. For senior citizens the interest rate is 8.75% with a yield of 11.52%. However PAN(permanent account number) is mandatory for opening an account under these schemes.

State Tourism to promote Home Stays

Partial ban on soft drinks in Karnataka

Karnataka has decided to ban the sale and consumption of pepsi,cola and other 9 aerated drinks in educational institutions and hospital premises. The ban will come into effect from August 14th.This is also applicable to govt and aided private schools and colleges, govt and private hospitals, govt offices and govt functions. The ban is in view with the study conducted by the State revealing pesticide residues in the soft drinks.

Electric buses for Mysore likely

The Karnataka government is planning to introduce electric buses that would run on electricity for Mysore roads. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is said to have made a proposal to the CM on the project which is estimated to cost around Rs 150 crore.The buses will draw power from overhead cables using trolley poles and will run on pneumatic tyres.Also these buses will have longer life span and more environment friendly.

Govt to implement BE/MBBS fee subsidy

Karnataka Govt had decided to go ahead with the fee subsidy that it has proposed for students selected to the engineering and medical courses by the Common Entrance Test(CET) exams. Govt had earlier decided to drop the proposal saying that it was not feasible as it would cost the state exchequer over Rs. 24 crore a year.But the move was opposed by many and hence the State cabinet decided to reverse its decision and Education Minister had assured that the subsidies will be given to students of this year batch.

Karnataka will soon be introducing Rajastan's popular luxury train 'Palace of Wheels' in the State. The 'Palace on Wheels',that is to be obtained at a cost Rs 32 crore, will have tours covering major wildlife, heritage spots and beach resorts in Karnataka.The State also intend to actively promote tourism which aims to make a turnover of Rs 100 crore in the year 2006-07 compared to the last year's Rs 60 crore. This was informed by the KTDC Managing director during the mega travel and tourism fair held in Kolkata.
