Traffic blocked by AITUC rally in Bangalore Sunday, July 31, 2005 | JJ
Traffic was blocked at the central part of the city by All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) rally in Bangalore. The rally was to protest against the "anti-labour" policies of the State Government. Police said the protesters pelted stones during a procession, which culminated in a dharna. Buses were damaged and several buses were also not allowed to move out of depots for some time.

Indian film industry’s legendary actor Amitabh Bachan to make his appearance in a Kannada film in writer-director Nagathihalli Chandrasekhar’s forthcoming movie ‘Amruthadhare’. This will mark Big B’s presence in a South Indian film for the first time. The director feels that Bachan should make a special appearance as it is an integral part of the script. It is told that the Big B himself had agreed to act in the Kannada movie out of his gratitude to the people of Karnataka. The film features Dhyan in the leading role along with the charming Kannadiga girl, Ramya, who is in turn a big fan of Bachan.
VTU bans usage of Cell-phones Sunday, July 31, 2005 | MP
Visveshvaraya Technological University (VTU) on Saturday passed an order prohibiting students and their teachers across the State from using mobile phones in the “academic areas”- which includes classrooms, labs, libraries, seminar halls, and even valuation centers. This applies to university centers and affiliated colleges including both teachers and students, starting from this academic year, Sept 1st. VTU Registrar Prof M. S. Shivakumar explained that this action was prompted to stop students from malpractice and also added that Principals of colleges have been authorized to take action if anyone is found violating this norm.
Flood alert on Krishna, Cauvery banks Saturday, July 30, 2005 | MP
A flood alert has been warned in the villages on the banks of Krishna and Cauvery rivers in Gulbarga and Mysore respectively. Red alert has also been sounded in the villages on the banks of down stream Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir and the nearby low lying areas of Belgaum District. Belgaum has been reported to be worst rain hit with at least 4000 cases of house collapse in the last 1 month.

Bangalore Walks, a walking tour similar to the lines of London Walks is set to begin next weekend. A look into the city’s almost 200 years old rich history and heritage is what most people would cherish on these walks that would take you back to the great Victorian era; the stretch that starts from one end of MG Road at the marvelous Trinity church, through the Cauvery Emporium junction and then into Brigade Road before turning into Rest House Road and back to MG Road. The other walks include Brunton Road, Primrose Road, Museum Road, St.Patrick’s Church area, Crescent Road and such. They are truly ‘History, culture and discovery’ says Arun Pai the mastermind behind this new initiative. The walk is certainly expected to draw a lot of tourists.
Express postal cargo service launched Friday, July 29, 2005 | MP
India Post, run by the Department of Posts, launched the express cargo segment Logistics Post between Bangalore and Chennai on Thursday. Hosur,Vellore,Ranipet,Amur and Kanchipuram are marked as the intermediary junctions on the Bangalore Chennai route. Charges are to be based on weight as well as volume of goods. Chief Postal General Karnataka Postal Circle Meera Datta noted that the tariff will vary depending on distance and location as octroi, toll tax, service tax and demurrage charged extra. The Dept. of Posts also noted that insurance is compulsory for every consignment in Logistics Post.
Karnataka to be developed state by 2010: CM Friday, July 29, 2005 | MP
Chief Minister Dharam Singh stated that Karnataka will be projected as one of the most developed state of the nation by the year 2010, going by the pace of development and the record inflow of investment into the state in the last 14 months of the coalition government in the state. “We have rolled out the red carpet for the investors and Karnataka has emerged as the top investment destination” said Mr. Singh who was in Hyderabad on the launch of Suminfra 2005, the summit on sustainable public –private partnerships(PPP), jointly organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry and Govt. of Andhra. The ONGC’s investment in mega petrochemical project would be a “big shot in the arm” for the government’s effort to industrialise Karnataka, he said. The project implementation is expected to start shortly and the other projects like LNG based power project, re-gasification plant, Mangalore-Bangalore gas pipeline would be operational in 3-4 years. The summit also showcased Karnataka and its potential for PPAs in various sectors.

Minister for Power H D Revanna signed an MoU agreement in the presence of Chief Minister N Dharam Singh with Electrification Corporation (REC) and Electricity Supply Companies for supply of unified and standardised electricity to rural areas. Under the agreement the state will receive Rs 977-crore assistance from the Centre and REC for providing access to easy electrification to villages in a phased manner in the next five years under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyuthikaran Yojana (RGGVY).

Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, ex-MP announced the same and said all wooden furniture, paintings and cast iron and ornamental fittings were being done up to restore the palace's pristine glory. Tickets would be a little on the higher side at Rs 100 for adults and Rs 50 for children. School children would receive concession he said, adding that spastic and underprivileged children would be given free entrance on a particular day in a year.

ONGC's Mangalore Project gets PM’s approval Sunday, July 24, 2005 | JJ
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s proposed LNG, a power and petrochemicals project at Mangalore gets Prime Minister's approval. A announcement from Prime Minister's Office, dated July 15, said: "After due consideration of all aspects of the matter, the Prime Minister has approved the various projects at Mangalore under the MoU between ONGC and Karnataka. ONGC plans to set up a Rs 7,475 crore petrochemical and aromatic plant, Rs 8594 crore LNG based power project, Rs 3590 crore C2/C3 recovery plant and LNG terminal and Rs 945 crore gas transportation pipelines. Officials said the state-owned firm had last year signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Karanataka government for projects worth Rs 25,000 crore but could not proceed due to objections from Petroleum Ministry. Petroleum Ministry on May 19, a day after Prime Minister reviewed ONGC's plans, contended that ONGC made the investment plan "without approval of the government and company board."

Chamundi Hill ropeway connecting the foot of the Chamundi Hill to its peak will be constructed soon. Tourism Commissioner Mahendra Jain said that the contract for the Rs. 6.5 cr. project was awarded to a Bangalore-based agency 'SIKKA' eight years ago but due to various reasons and non-availability of some machinery, the work was held up. He further said that the agency had been asked to commence the work before Aug. 15, failing which, the contract would be cancelled. He said a deadline of 18 months had been given to complete the project. By all likelihood, the foundation stone laying ceremony will be held either on Aug. 10 or 12, he said.

Cauvery water from Kabini is still flowing into the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu but stopped out release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir now.. Water Resources Minister Mallikarjun Kharge informed in the Assembly that "The question of release of water from the KRS dam does not arise now." At present reservoir level is 56 feet now as compared to above 104 feet during the corresponding period last year.

Release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu has been stopped as the storage level at the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir continues to be a low 98 feet. Tamil Nadu Saturday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) to persuade Karnataka to release water to its farmers. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said "we have received only 13.70 TMC ft as against the prescribed quantity of 31.54 TMC ft leaving a shortfall of 17.84 TMC ft of water."
Subbanna theatre legendary passes away Monday, July 18, 2005 | JJ
K V Subbanna a legendary figure in the field of Kannada theatre passes away following a cardiac arrest. Born in 1932 is survived by his wife and son. K V Subbanna received Magsaysay and Padmashree awards. He was the founder of "NeeNaaSam" (Nelanakanteshwara Nataka Samsthe). Chief Minister said "Subanna was the inspiring force behind the NeeNaaSam, which enriched the Kannada stage and 'Heggodu Prakshanna,' which enriched Kannada publication field. In his death, the literary and cultural fields have suffered a great loss."

Guinness Book selected Shanti, for honors. Directed by the noted writer, Baragur Ramachandrappa, Shanti is the second Indian film to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Dutt's Hindi film Yaadein in 1964 was the first Indian film to earn the distinction. Dr. Ramachandrappa told presspersons "I have given more importance to explore the creative aspects of the theme than to conceptualise it." He added "The reference to the UN is vital in this context as the world body is the creation of two contradictory state of affairs — war and peace. I have selected the female character in the film as peace is generally considered feminine whereas war is masculine," Shanti is produced by Ramesh Yadav. Bhavana is the only one in the cast. Music is by Hamsalekha and editing is by Suresh Urs while Nagaraja Adavani has handled the camera. Shanti has also been awarded the second best film in the State.

Supreme Court approved the joint agreement of State government and the Karnataka Private Medical and Dental Colleges for the admission for the year 2005 - 2006. As per the joint agreement government, management seat-sharing ratio would be 50:50 for medical and dental courses and 65:35 for engineering. Approving the joint memo the bench said ‘‘we deem it appropriate to permit the state government and the association to regulate the admission in medical and dental colleges on the basis of the joint memo for the academic year 2005-2006’’.

Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Siddaramaiah announced that government is in process to exempt all agricultural implements from VAT. Replying to question in the assembly Minister said that several agricultural implements listed under the VAT schedule enjoyed zero percent tax now and those unlisted attracted 12.5 per cent tax. He added oilseeds used for sowing operations have been exempted from tax, the seeds used for extraction of oil is charged four per cent tax.

Speaking at a national conference on ‘Delhi Metro: The Story of Success’, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Managing Director E Sreedharan disclosed metro rail networks in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad is likely to commence within this financial year. Pan African delegates visited ISRO satellite centre, Directorate of State Education Research and Training (DSERT), Karnataka State Remote Sensing Application Centre and Narayana Hrudalaya super specialty hospitals to study the space technology and its applications which African Union is planning for African Development and connecting all the 53 nations of the African Union by satellite and fibre optic links. On arrival at ISRO Satellite centre the delegates were briefed about the latest communication satellite, INSAT-4A, which is in its final stages of readiness to be transported to Kourou, French Guyana, for its launch on board Ariane. At DSERT the delegates were briefed about the various educational program and demonstration of the remote sensing applications for resources and monitoring. Later the delegate visited Narayana Hrudalaya, super specialty hospitals where they were briefed about space-based telemedicine, which is being utilsed, by the hospital to network with all other hospitals in various rural and remote areas by ISRO for telemedicine.

Proposed hike in power tariff from Rs 4.50 per unit to Rs 5.10 per unit will affect the textile mills. Chairman of KTMA told reporters "The proposal to hike the current power tariff from Rs 4.50 per unit to Rs 5.10 per unit would force many to shift mills to Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, given the relatively lower tariffs in these neighboring states." Power tariff neighboring states are AP (Rs 3.41 unit), Maharashtra (Rs 3.30 unit) and Kerala (Rs 3.20). Shifting of mills neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra will create unemployment among the textile industry workers.

Anniyan" is the first Indian cinema to be dubbed in French language. Paramount Pictures, the largest Hollywood filmmakers have decided to make the French version of "Anniyan". Distributor S. Narayan has bought the rights for a whopping Rs. 1 crore (excluding Rs. 25 lakh publicity expenses). Narayan has sold the distribution rights for Mysore and Hubli regions for Rs. 20 lakh. Chairman of National Federation of Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) & Credit Societies Ltd, Vijaykumar told reporters "Close on the heels of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat signing MoUs with RBI, Kerala and Karnataka are expected to sign a similar pact in a week's time." RBI would assess training and computerisation needs of the UCBs in Kerala and Karnataka. Karnataka 15-member medical team of epidemiologists has started its work to prevent epidemic in Vadodara and nearby villages where flood waters is receding. Dr Vidya Pravin of the team said ‘‘Mosquito larvae mature within fifteen days. If we can focus on controlling their growth now, we can prevent the spread of malaria and filarial.’’ He added ‘‘already we have detected a positive case of Malaria in Abhra village of Karjan taluka. The village was cleaned up in a matter of five hours, after we guided the villagers on what to do about stopping the malaria spread.’’

The IT Academy, which will serve as a pivotal point for imparting IT training to teachers across the state, is a key deliverable of the MoU signed between Microsoft and the Government of Karnataka, for implementation of Microsoft's Partners-in-Learning program. Under the MoU with the government of Karnataka, Microsoft has agreed to set up three IT Academy Centers in the state at Gulbarga, Bangalore and Dharwad respectively for training over 20,000 teachers and 400,000 students (From class III to class XII) over a five-year period. Karnataka chief minister Dharam Singh inaugurated the center. The facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art IT lab complete with latest hardware and software, a comprehensive IT curriculum and well-trained staff for effective delivery of IT training for school teachers, noted the press release. Additionally the IT training courseware has been translated in Kannada for ensuring improved understanding of content by teachers. Apart from setting up of the IT Academy Centers in the state, the MoU between Microsoft and the Government of Karnataka for Microsoft's Partners-in-Learning program entails creation of a localized IT curriculum for students, rolling-out of teacher and student scholarship programs and setting up of a teachers' portal.

Speaking at a demonstration organised by the MDMK in front of the Tiruchy Collectorate, MP L Ganesan blamed Karnataka Government for “draining” 500 million liters of Cauvery water to meet the drinking water needs of Bangalore City residents. He requested Central Government to study the situation in the interests of the farmers in Tamil Nadu. Ganesan said “If 500 million litres of water is drained daily, Tamil Nadu will not get adequate water and the delta districts will become a desert in due course.” He added “The Central Government and the Karnataka Government are responsible for the Cauvery water sharing row. The approach of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister too complicated the issue much to the chagrin of the farmers in the State.”

Karnataka emerged as the overwhelming champions in the 32nd Junior National aquatics held at Subhas Sarovar swimming complex in Kolkata. Three swimmers who excelled in their respective categories helped Karnataka with eleven gold on the final day with. Performances from Rohit R. Havaldar in Group I and Aaron D' Souza in Group II were remarkable. Havaldar created three meet records and won five gold in each events he participated. Bangalore is to get Toyota plant to manufacture small cars with subsidiary Daihatsu Motors. Japan’s leading automaker Toyota Motor is planning to start production by 2007. As per the company’s strategy to expand its market beyond North America, Europe and to emerging markets, Toyota is planning to invest 12 billion yen (more than $100 million) in India to produce about 100,000 small cars. Toyota, which is the second largest carmaker in US, is planning to capture Indian market which is controlled by Maruti Udyog market which owns up to 50 per cent of the market share in India. Toyota’s share in Indian market is just 5 percent.

Study titled “India Corruption Study, 2005” carried out by the Indian Chapter of Transparency International in association with the Centre for Media Studies in the field of public services such as police, lower courts, land administration and municipal services showed that Karnataka is fourth most corrupt states. Kerala ranked the lowest in the corruption index and Bihar is the most corrupt state followed by and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh. Police, judiciary and municipalities are the top corrupt services in the country.

Karnataka spared 1,000 cusecs of water from the Kabini reservoir to Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu due to the good inflow of water into the reservoirs from Kerala in recent days. Karnataka Chief Minister Dharam Singh said"There has been a good inflow from Kerala in recent days and the storage position has improved in Kabini, Hemavathi, and Arangi reservoirs across the Cauvery in the State. I will discuss with the Irrigation Minister and Irrigation Department officials the issue of releasing water to Tamil Nadu." Water level in Kabini receded to 57 feet as from total capacity of 65 feet after release of water.

In a bid to add value to its services, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has introduced luxury Volvo (Iravatha) services to Hospet from Bangalore (via Chitradurga), in addition to the existing services from Bangalore to Chikmagalore and Ernakulam (via Mysore). The new buses will leave Bangalore at 11 p.m. and arrive at Hospet at 5.30 a.m. In the return journey, they will leave Hospet at 11 p.m. and arrive in Bangalore at 5 am. KSRTC has also been operating Volvo Executive and Mayura Executive services to Ernakulam via Mysore.

He alleged that leaders in both the parties were busy in allegations since they came to the power neglecting the problems faced by the people adding that people were fed up with the working of the government. He criticised the anti-people policies of the UPA government and there would soon be a Third Front in the national politics.
