National Youth Volleyball: Karnataka men bag trophy Wednesday, May 31, 2006 | MP
Karnataka emerged as champions defeating the defending champions Kerala bagging the men's title in the 10th National Youth Volleyball championships held in Bangalore on Tuesday.Karnataka men has beaten Kerala in sets 25-23, 25-15, 25-17 and won the trophy and prize money of Rs. 1.25 lakhs. Haryana came third in the men's title beating Uttar Pradesh. However the women's title went to Kerala who beat hosts Karnataka in straight sets of 25-17, 25-18, 25-17.
Comed-K test results to be published on June 8 Tuesday, May 30, 2006 | MP
The COMEDK UGET-2006 entrance exams which was held on 28th May will publish the test scores of the exams on June 8th. However the final merit list for admissions to the professional courses will be published only on 14th June. This will be announced after verification on the test scores. After announcement of the test scores, candidates seeking clarifications can write to Comed-K on this regard and the final date for recieving request for verification of test score is June 11th.
Budhia stopped from running in Bangalore too Sunday, May 28, 2006 | MP
Child prodigy Budhia Singh was stopped from running in Bangalore too. This Orissa boy who made it to the Limca Book of Record was in Bangalore to mark the Press club's anniversary celebrations and was scheduled for a 1km run from the club to Vidhan Soudha via Rajbhavan streets. But the City police came in and stopped the little boy from making the symbolic marathon run in the public in view of the High Court ban. The police stand was that the organisers did not take any prior permission to hold the marathon run. However Budhia was allowed to run within the Press Club premises.

The film which hit the US screens lately is riding high on success and is said to be pulling crowds of all genre at the US theaters. State to go with monorail on its own, says CM Saturday, May 27, 2006 | MP
Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that Karnataka would go with its proposed monorail project on its own and he ruled out the need to seek any approval from the Center government on this regard. This came in view of the Union Minister's remark that the Centre had not heard anything from Karnataka on its going ahead with the monorail project along with Metro rail. The CM in response maintained that the Bangalore monorail project would be implemented jointly with the public-private participation and the state will launch the monorail work from Aug 15.
Stir in BJP over Yatnal remarks Friday, May 26, 2006 | MP
The Karnataka BJP unit has seen some major happenings within the party after the BJP MP, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal demanding deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's resignation from the BJP leadership post. Yatnal's difference in opinion with the Dy CM was even gained momentum as it got support from some of the party's office leaders. There were even rumours that Yediyurappa has agreed to resign from his post,however his loyalists objected to do so. Now the issue will be probably disccused during the BJP executive meeting to be held in New Delhi on May 28.
State tourism's Luxury on Trains from next year Wednesday, May 24, 2006 | MP
Karnataka Tourism Minister has announced the starting of the state government's tourism project 'Luxury on Trains' inspired in lines with the Rajastan's luxury train, 'Palace on Wheels'. This airconditioned train which is likely to start its trial run early next year will cover the various tourist spots of Karnataka. The commercial operation is expected to kickoff by March 2007 which will be initially run between Hampi and Goa operating once in a week. A 5 day tour package for tourists is also on the offer.

Actor Kumar Govind who has forayed into film direction is busy with his latest Kannada film 'Satya' which is presently undergoing with its shooting. The film is progressing with its shooting at various beautiful locales of the country including the great Taj Mahal. Also places like Kulu- Manali, Agra, Fathepur Sikri, Jaipur are all being shot for the film. The film talks about the quest for love.The film is based on a simple story line told in a different manner, says the filmmaker.
Record results in PU exams Tuesday, May 23, 2006 | MP
This years Pre University exam results has seen a record pass percentage of 53.97, the highest ever in the pass 10 years.Out of the total 3,77,843 students appeared for the examinations 2,03,930 students has passed.Udupi district recorded the highest of all with 79.96% passes while Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu came out second and third with 79.21% and 69.11% respectively. As usual girls had fared better this time too with 59.75% compared to that of boys(49%).
Govt for Integrated IT park in Hubli Monday, May 22, 2006 | MP
In a move to encourage IT firms setting up in secondary cities in the state, the Karnataka government has unveiled its plansfor building up an Integrated IT City in the Hubli-Dharward area. This wasinformedby CM Kumaraswamy. He said that the project was aimed at attracting professional employment to the northern districts of Karnataka. The project estimated at a cost of Rs 43crore will be housed in 300 acres of land.

Daisy Bopanna is impressive. Hamsalekha’s music is fine. B Madhu’s dialogues are appealing. Except for the comedy scenes, the film altogether fares well.
Separate seats for boys, girls: suggests BU Saturday, May 20, 2006 | MP
Bangalore University Syndicate has plans to implement an order that would let boys and girl students seated separately in classrooms. The initiative is in an effort to guard the girl students, say the varsity officials. The proposal on this was considered during the Syndicate meeting, however there have been mixed response from students on the University's move. Authorities are yet to take a final verdict on this after holding discussions with parents, educationists and the concerned parties.
K-MAT entrance test for MBA, MCAs on July 2 Friday, May 19, 2006 | MP
K-MAT, the common entrance test for admissions to MBA, MCA courses in private colleges conducted by the Karnataka Private Postgraduate College's Association is scheduled for July 2nd. Students seeking admissions to MBA, MCA in various private colleges in Karnataka need to qualify in the test. Based on the K-MAT results there are 72 colleges offering MBA and 62 colleges for MCAs.The application forms for applying for the tests will be distributed from June 1st onwards and could be obtained from the associated colleges. ICMR sets up regional medical centre in Belgaum Thursday, May 18, 2006 | MP
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has set up a new Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Belgaum to promote research and development in health services which will be inaugurated on May 20 by the ICMR Director. A special medicinal plants museum also is being instituted along with the center which showcases rare collection of medicinal plants found in the Western Ghats. JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda made it clear that his party would fight the coming Karnataka civic polls all alone and there will not be any alliance with BJP.“There is no change in our stand on fighting the elections independently. Julie Kannada remake of Hindi version Julie is directed by debutant Poornima. The film is just being adapted from the original without much change. The movie deals with two youngsters falling in love and plans to get married despite their religious differences. Ramya as Julie is fine and Dino Morea is appealing. The songs are inspiring and visually attractive. But no doubt the original is far much superior to the remake.

State objects to Cauvery tribunal reports Friday, May 12, 2006 | MP
The report of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal team has brought much confusion and the State which also objected to the team's decision of sending its crop water requirement report to the party states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry to seek their response on the issue. The report has indicated State's irrigation water requirement as 251tmc for Karnataka's cultivable land area of 18.85 lakh acres. This is against the states demand for 408tmc for 27 LA."There is no need for the tribunal to send the report to the riparian states to seek their opinion. It will only add to the confusion apart from fomenting tension. The tribunal should announce its final award," expressed Karanataka Water resources Minister, Mr. Eswarappa.

The Karnataka governement is soon to take a decision on the proposal for introducing Kannada and English subjects from primary classes. According to the policy, if the cabinet approval is made on this regard Kannada will be introduced in all English medium schools from first standard onwards and English will be taught from the first standard in Kannada-medium schools in the coming academic year. Kannada will also be a compulsory subject from the third standard in linguistic minority schools., This was informed by Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti.

The Karnataka Government's Common Entrance Test (CET) for admissions to professional colleges has begun on Tuesday. Reports indicate that as many as 62,175 students took the biology paper and 79,200 candidates appeared for the maths paper on Tuesday's CET at 186 centers in Karnataka. However a low mood was seen in the students this time, where CET entry would mean a tougher task with limited number of seats. Unlike previous years, this year the CET exams would give in entry to roughly only 10% of the seats in the professional colleges. This covers admissions to 300 seats in medical colleges, 60 seats for dental and 3000 seats for engineering. The second day's test on Wednesday will be on Physics and Chemistry papers.
Hubli airport upgrade: Govt to give 386 acre land Tuesday, May 9, 2006 | MP
Karnataka government has agreed to provide 386.6 acres of land towards upgrading of the Hubli airport.This was informed byRevenue Minister, Mr Jagdish Shettar. The land will be handed over to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) which will set up an all weather airport at Hubli which will get the airport upgradation work done in a period of 24 months. The land acquisition is likely to cost between Rs 20 to 30 crore.

Aajay directed by Meher Ramesh stars Punit Rajkumar, Anuradha Mehta in the lead roles. Punit is impressive in comical and serious roles. Anuradha is average. But Prakash Raj as the rowdy Veerabhadra is simply superb with his incredible performance. Camerawork is attractive and music too is catchy. Director Meher has succeeded in narrating a story well with right dose of sentiments and humour. Aajay is a complete entertainer with action, romance and comedy, a pure treat for the Punit fans.

Of all the Kannada films released lately, none of the films except for Sudeep's My Autograph has made it to the boxoffice so far. 'My Autograph',the Tamil remake of Cheran's Autograph is declared a super hit and will shortly complete 100 days in as many as 5 big centers. The film's music also has made good trade in the markets. And it is disappointing that many of the new releases like Ambi and Sevanthi Sevanthi failed to meet the expections.
36% rise in State's IT exports Friday, May 5, 2006 | MP
Compared to the last year,Karnataka’s software exports have grown by 36% this financial year 2005-2006.With this the State's ITexports have reached Rs 37,600 crore making it the leader in this sector. Karnataka is said to have added fresh investments from 124 foreign equity companies and 77 Indian companies during this period. The state's share in the country's total share of exports has also grown to 37.6%, from 36% last year. Karnataka targets IT exports of Rs 49,000 crore in the next financial year.

Ambi directed by Nagendra Prasad is an action cum love story with nothing more than the usual affair. The director himself takes charge of the dialogues and music in the film. Unlike the usual N.Kumar films, Ambi fail to make any impression in the audience. Aditya, Manya play the lead roles who are quite okay. But it is Shobhraj who puts up a notable performance. Music of the film too is not inspiring.

Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy had asked the IT firms to focus on secondary cities rather than Bangalore as the City is facing shortage in land. The move by the government is to overcome the infrastructure problems in Bangalore. With landprices shooting up in Bangalore, IT companies should look for secondary cities like Mysore, Dharwad, Hubli wherethe infrastructure costs are much lesser."I am not ignoring the IT sector. People who work in small-scale industries are facing a lot of problems. In that light I discussed some issues requesting them to go for second-rate cities," said Kumaraswamy.
