Maharastra seek Central rule in Belgaum

Maharastra govt is seeking Central rule in the Marathi-speaking towns and villages on the Karnataka side of its border areas. This includes the dispute areas of Belgaum, Nipani, Karwar, Bhalki and Bidar towns and nearby villages in Karnataka which the Maharastra claim that the Central government should keep in power till the disputes are resolved.

Cabinet approves Rs1800-crore for N Karnataka

The State cabinet has approved Rs 1,800-crore for North Karnataka Urban Sector Investment Project. The project is aimed at providing basic infrastructure facilities in the backward regions of the state. More than half, 60% of the project is being funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).The project which will be implemented in 13 city municipal corporations, six town municipal corporations and one town panchayat is expected to finish by 2012. Many places that will be covered by the project include Belgaum, Bellary, Gulbarga, Hubli-Dharwad, Bidar, Chamarajnagar, Davanagere, Gada, Gokak, Haveri, Hospet, Koppal, Nippani, Basavakalyan, Jamkhandi and Yadgir.

Ramya heads to Austria for Datta

Karnataka Bank revises NRE deposit rates

Karnataka Bank Ltd. had recently revised its Non resident (external) NRE rupee deposit rates. The rate per annum for one year to less than two years and for two years to less than three years is revised to 6.29 per cent (6.04 earlier). For three years and upto five years, the new rate is 6.27 per cent (6.02). The new rates has come into effect from 19th April onwards.

Govt to set up Rs100m memorial for Rajkumar

As a tribute to the great Kannada thespian Rajkumar, the Karnataka government has decided to set up a memorial in Bangalore at a cost of Rs100 million. The memorial will be built in a 20-acre expansive Kanteerava studio where his body was laid to rest. The memorial will display Raj’s contributions to the Kannad film industry including collection of his movies, dialogues, scripts etc

Namitha to make debut in Kannada

Mangalore reports decline in crime rates

A significant decline in the number of crimes has been seen in Dakshina Kannada district. This was reported by top police official during a press release in Mangalore. Offences such as attempt to murder, rioting and causing hurt have dropped by 32 per cent.Also theft and burglary reduced by 31%. There also has been a decrease in the number of road accidents.However suicide rates,rape, dowry, molestation and domestic violence remained on a high compared to the previous year. District police is keeping a constant watch to keep the domestic violence to a low and with the advent of technology, video and digital cameras will also be used in the futureto help with the investigation work at crime scenes.

Infosys touches $2 billion mark

IT giant Infosys in its 25th year of operation has reached the milestone of $2 billion mark in revenues. Infy posted a growth of 33.5% for the year ended March 31, 2006 with revenues of $2.15 billion. This Bangalore based software firm which took 23 years to reach the first billion dollars in revenues had took only 23 months for its next billion dollars. The company targets $2.8 billion at a growth of 29-31% in its 2007 fiscal.

Emotional farewell for Annavaru

Amidst of widespread violence by frenzied fans, Kannada film icon Rajkumar was given a tearful farewell by lakhs of people. Rajkumar's body was laid to rest at Kantirava studio, owned by Rajkumar's family, in the Nandini layout area in Bangalore. Thousands of mourners took part in the funeral procession and there were even incidents of houses being damaged along the procession route.

2 day State mourning; State honours for Raj

Mourning at the loss of Karnataka's greatest star, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy announced a two day state mourning from Wednesday on the death of Karnataka's greatest thespian Rajkumar. He also added that the last rites of Rajkumar will be performed with full state honours. He will be accorded State funeral on Thursday.

Kannada megastar's wish remains unfulfilled

Bangalore, April. 12 (PTI): Kannada megastar Rajkumar, who passed away today, wanted to return to acting but his wish remained unfulfilled.
After he was set free by forest bandit Veerappan, who held the actor hostage for 108 days in 2000, Rajkumar had promised his fans that he would soon act in the film 'Bhakta Ambareesh.' Rajkumar, a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award, was all set to play the lead role in the film but his health did not permit it. His last film "Shabdavedi" hit the screen seven years ago and since then, Rajkumar, affectionately called "annavaru" (Elder brother) by everyone in the film industry, had been toying with the idea of returning to acting, but it was not to be.

Kannada legend Dr Rajkumar passes away

Legendary actor and Kannada superstar Dr Rajkumar passed away. He died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday afternoon. He was 76. A popular icon and a great singer,he has acted in over 200 Kannada films in a span of 45 years. He has won several international, national and state films awards. He also won the prestigious Dada Phalke award for his great contributions to the Kannada film industry.

State BJP leaders set to join Advani yatra

The Karnataka BJP leaders are all set to join L.K. Advani's Bharat Suraksha Yatra which will be entering Karnataka on Wednesday. Most of the leaders of the State unit are likely to participate in the yatra which will will pass through the party's strongholds like Bijapur, Bagalkot, Dharwad North, Dharwad South and Bellary. Also Mr Advani is to address a public meeting at Bijapur, his first of its kind in Karnataka. Later he will also address meetings at at Bagalkot, Naragund, Navalgund and Hubli.

KSRTC to launch e-ticket booking facility

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has anounced its plans to offer online ticket booking facility for its travelers. The service is aimed at providing easy ticket booking from any place for any destination. The facility, Any Where Any Time Advance Ticket Reservation (AWATAR) will be introduced shortly by April end and will be firstly be implemented at KSRTC counters and franchises. Directed by young debutant Ravi R Garani , Shubham comes up with some fresh ideas. The story is about a girl who is trapped between her lover and her three possessive brothers. The first half turns out refreshing but he fails to keep the tempo in the later half. Shivadhwaj and Sanjitha in the lead roles are impressive. Gurukiran’s music is a definite plus. Shubham is visually attractive and R Giri’s camerawork deserves a special mention.

Unscheduled powercut in State enforced

With Karnataka facing shortage of power, unscheduled load shedding is enforced in the State from Friday onwards. This will be implemeted during the peak hours throughout the state for next few days. The powercut comes in view of the failure of several Central and State power stations which contributes to a shortage of 18 million units a day. The loadshedding will of about 30minutes in many parts of the State including Bangalore.

Karnataka Govt felicitates Anil Kumble

The Karnataka Government on Wednesday felicitated Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble at Vidhan Soudha for claiming 500 wickets in Test cricket. Lauding on the Banglorean cricketer in the felicitating function, Chief Minister H D Kumarasswamy also said that the government would consider Kumble's request for land for setting up a sports academy in the state. Kumble said he was pleased to be honored by his home state and also added that he was looking forward to make it to the upcoming Indian World Cup team.

Vijaya Raghavendra is the hero in Sevanthi Sevanthi while in Julie it is Bangalore lad, Dino Morea. Action film, Ambi stars Manya opposite Adhitya.

UG Entrance test for COMED-K on May 20-21

The undergraduate entrance test (UGET 2006) for admission to professional courses including medical, engineering and dental courses to the private colleges attached to the COMED colleges of Karnataka will be held on May 20th and 21st. Aptitude test for B Arch will be held in the morning session on May 20th( 10:00 am to 12:00). Phy and Chem test is scheduled on the May 21st morning session. Biology paper test will be from 2 pm to 3pm on 21st. Mathematics test from 3:30pm -4:30pm on the 21st.

Govt take action against Biocon

Karnataka government has called for strict action against the Bangalore based biotech firm, Biocon India in view of violation of import norms by the company. The State govt had earlier cancelled Biocon's licence for importing methylcobalamin, a drug used for treatment of nervous disorders citing violation of import norms. The State Drug Dept has alleged that the firm was unauthorizedly importing the chemical from China and marketing the drug. The government had written to the Centre in this regard and an inquiry will be conducted by the Center's Drugs Controlling Dept who would be visiting the company soon.

A comprehensive Kannada encyclopedia is in the making where one can get information on any subject related to the field on science, literature and many other topics which keeps adding to its knowledge base. The site is being titled Kannada Wikipedia and showcases articles on over 1200 write ups which serve as a free encyclopedia for readers all over the world. The site also allows readers to contribute their share of knowledge if they wish to do so and can edit information on any topic.

5589 students to get degrees in KSOU convocation

As many as 5589 students will be receiving their degrees during the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) convocation ceremony which will be held in Mysore on April 3rd. 3,503 students will receive their degrees for PG courses while 2,086 will get their degrees for undergraduate courses. During the function, four students will also receive their doctoral degrees. The convocation address will be carried out by the West Bengal Governer, Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

Thandege Thakka Maga

Thandege Thakka Maga by director S Mahender is the Kannada remake of the Tamil superhit film, Thevar Magan. Super heros Ambarish and Upendra comes together in the role of father and son and does their respective roles well. Sakshi Shivanand and Laila are impressive. The story and subject is well maintained except for the lengthy climax. Venu’s dialogues and Krishnakumar’s camera work deserves special mention.

Senti films line up for Shivarajkumar

It looks like Kannada superhero, Shivrajkumar is into family films these days. The actor has couple of sentimental films lined up for him. Gandugali Kumara Rama is the ongoing project which he is geared into right now. Besides this the star has also given dates for S.Narayan's Gandana Mane and producer Soorappa Babu's Bandhu Balaga, both being projected as family films. K Prabhakar's 'Luv Kush' will be another film where he'll co-star with actor Upendra. Perhaps the success of his sentimental films like Thavarige Baa Thangi and Anna Thangi would have made him pick these choices.

Mohanlal sets up restaurant in Bangalore

Blore Metro gets Rs 1,699 cr Japan fund

Japan has agreed to fund Rs 1,699 crore for the Bangalore Metro rail project. This as the first installment of the project will cover 32% of the total project cost which is estimated at Rs 5,300 crore. A deal on this effect was signed between the officials of the two countries. Japan has also promised to provide more funds if necessary in its later phases. "The Bangalore Metro Rail project aims to overcome the problems of traffic congestion and air pollution and promote economic activities by replicating the Delhi Metro model," senior Japanese diplomat Hidenao Yanagi told media persons.
