Rakshita and Radhika together again

3 power projects in this fiscal year

In a move which will add 940 MW to the State power grid, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has decided to complete three power projects during the financial year in 2006-07. This will include Bellary Thermal Power Station, Raichur Thermal Power Station and Varahi Power Plant. Besides, in order to reduce the imbalance in power demand and its generation, (KPTCL) has also decided to take up five projects in the next five years. The Bellary thermal power plant is said to become operational by end of the year. The budget for 2006-07 has assigned Rs. 1,711. 35 crore for the energy sector.

Kannadigas celebrate Ugadi festival

According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the creator Lord Brahma started creation on this day - Chaitra suddha padhyami or the Ugadi day. Govt told to keep watch on rat fever disease

With cases of rat fever diseases reported in Karnataka districts like Gulbarga, Bidar and Raichur, the Government was asked to take immediate measures on this regard to control the spread of the disease. This was brought into notice by opposition leader Mr Dharam Singh in the legislative Assembly. Several cases of the highly contagious leptospirosis or rat fever were reported with two people confirmed to have died and many others admitted in hospitals in these areas.

Kumararama set for August release

Metro Rail: BJP questions BMPs role

The BJP came in strong voice and sought Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) role in the Metro Rail Project. While holding talks on the BMP budget for 2006-2007 the BJP leader at the BMP council also alleged that none of the MoU's signed between the BMP and the State Government in 2001 had been taken up so far. "What is the BMP's contribution to this mega project? Have you planned any improvement of service roads and pavements along the Metro Rail routes? The budget does not allocate any funds for supplementing the project from the BMP side," he said.

Jogi sweeps ETV film awards

The last year’s blockbuster Kannada film, Jogi sweeped most of the awards at the ETV-Vatika film awards. The film won 11 awards from 16 categories including best film, best director(Prem), best actor(Shivaraj Kumar), best music director(Guru Kiran), best editing(Srinivas), lyricist(Prem), best cinematography (M.R. Seenu),dialogues, story etc. Actress Ramya won the Best Actress award for the film Amruthadhare. Best Playback Singer (Male) was S.P. Balasubrahmanyam (film: Anna Tangi), while Chitra won the Best Playback Singer (Female) for the film Akash.

Infosys to get 845 acres of land in Bangalore

IT major Infosys Technologies Limited has been granted 845 acres of land for setting up its second campus in Sarjapur Road on the outskirts of Bangalore.The proposal was approved by the Karnataka government with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy giving nod for the Infosys's proposal for acquiring land. The company aims at setting up software development centre and residential quarters for its employees in Sarjapur Road. The new campus which is estimated at a cost of Rs. 1,500 crores is expected to create 25,000 jobs.

Ganda Hendathi finishes Bangkok shooting

The cast and crew of the Ganda Hendathi team is back from Bangkok after a 23 day shooting which included 42 scenes. The film has almost covered more than half part of its entire shooting schedules. The rest of the shooting will take place in India. The film directed by Ravi Srivatsa has Ravi Belagere playing the lead role in the film. Shailendra Babu produces the film.

Govt gives green signal for IT park at Devanahalli

A committee headed by Chief Minister Kumaraswamy has given approval for the investment for the proposed Devanahalli IT hardwarre park. The IT Park is being promoted by Shapoorji Pallonji which will be housed at a 1400 acre area near the upcoming Devanhali international airport. The govt has cleared investments worth Rs 28,000 crore, of which Rs 21,840 crore was contributed for software technology parks. Other investment included on sectors like engineering textiles etc.

Jothe Jothe Yali is a project from actor Darshan's home production. Darshan's brother Dinakarwill direct the film. Darshan's mother, Meena Thoogudeepa will produce the film, under the family banner named after Darshan's father Thoogudeepa Srinivas. Prem of Nenapirali fame will be the hero for the film. Ramya is the female lead. Darshan also makes special appearance in the film. The film is based on the theme of love in relationships.

State govt with new plans to promote tourism

The Karnataka government has come up with more plans to promote tourism in the state. This includes offering government land to industrialists for setting up resorts and privatising the management of government guest houses. The offer is made more attractive with the land prices made available at 50 per cent of the market value to entrepreneurs in all places except at Bangalore. The government had also taken initiatives to actively promote tourism in Bangalore with adventure sports, creating high profile housing facilities and allowing private parties to manage tanks like Ulsoor, Sankey, Madiwala, Bellandur, etc.

IISc to set up campus in Mysore

The country’s premier research Institute , the Indian Institute of Science has plans to set up a campus in Mysore. Besides the present campus in Bangalore, the new IISc campus will be housed near the Academic Staff College in Manasagangotri in Mysore. The decision for the new campus is with respect to the IISc and University of Mysore agreeing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding which is most likely to take place in April. The new alliance will help promote research and students exchange programmes, setting up of joint infrastructure etc.

Karnataka Budget; No new taxes,sops for the poor

The new JD(S)-BJP coalition Government had presented the Karnataka budget with no new taxes. The budget also presented any fund allocations for several new and innovative welfare schemes. Besides special attention has been given to agriculture, rural development, irrigation sectors and for improving infrastructure in urban areas. Other highlights include subsidised cooperative loans made available to weavers and fishermen and a cut down in the interest rates of farm loans.

Darshan named the banner after his father Thoogudeepa Srinivas and his film 'Jothe Jothe Yali' was launched with a muhurat recently. The film is about mature love. A youth who thinks only of the present and a girl who thinks only about the future get attracted to each other. The film also shows that lovers after getting married lose interest in each other. Prem, who debuted in Nenapirali plays the lead opposite Ramya with Darshan in a guest role.

Apple has Bangalore plans

Apple Computer has announced that it plans to open a new call center in Bangalore. It has stirred the debate, once again, over outsourcing of high tech U.S. jobs. With the move, Apple joins Dell, which last year opened a call center in India amid much criticism, and IBM, which is increasingly moving jobs to the subcontinent and has said it may employ as many as 50,000 workers there in the coming years. Apple tried to put the best face on the project, saying that though it was building a facility in Bangalore in which to locate the call center, it isn't planning to cut any existing American jobs.

Bangalore Metro logo released

The proposed Bangalore Metro rail project's logo was released by the Karnataka Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. The logo got selected from 400 entries, was titled, 'Namma Metro'is in green and purple colours. The green color represents the garden city while the purple represents technology and modernity and at the same time being easy to remember. The logo signifies the ambition of making the transport service dear to everyone. The work on the metro rail would start from April beginning.

Raj may sing a song for Arasu

Mlore power project: ONGC to invest Rs 45000cr

ONGC has agreed to invest even upto Rs 450000 crore in the mega Mangalore Power Project in the State, said Chief Minister Kumara Swamy. This is much higher than what was initially assigned for the project which was of Rs 25000 crore. He also added that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has agreed to lay the foundation stone for the power project shortly after the parliamentary session.

CM calls on private sectors to join infrastructure development

The reports on child sex ratio in the State indicate that many of the districts in Karnantaka are faced with instances of female foeticide. This is not only seen in North Karnataka districts but also in urban areas like Bangalore. The Census survey in some of the wards of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike limits indicates a growing gender imbalance lesser than 900 females for 1000 males. Some of the instances are Dasarahalli (841), Bommanahalli, Konakunte (865) and Hebbugodi (861).

Blore Metro project gets GoM clearance

The Karnataka government’s proposal for Bangalore Metro rail project is said to have got the clearance from the Group of Ministers (GoM) at the Center. As per the proposal the Bangalore Metro will be built on the standard guage and will be under the Mysore Tramways Act. The Urban Development Ministry is said to deliver model legislation on the safety laws for the metro system. Now the project has to get the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affair’s final clearance.

Innovative Film City to complete by Dec 2006

Innovative Film City project has kicked off with the foundation stone laying ceremony on Thursday. The mega project build by the Innovative Group spreads over 50 acres on the Bangalore-Mysore highway at the Bidadi Industrial area, 27 kms off Bangalore. The project at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore will be completed by December 2006. The Innovative Film City will have six mega studios, a film institute, a production house, an IT park. Besides it will feature attractions like Ripley’s Believe It or Not, wax museum with replications depicting scenes from Mahabharata, Ramayana, The Bible, Haunted Mansion, Jurrasic Journey, India’s largest amphitheater, a mini aerodrome modeled on the lines of popular European cities, a mini golf course , Go-Karting zone, residential complex etc.

My Autograph: Sudeep credits it to Cheran

If Sudeep gets honors for his recent directed debut film, My Autograph, no doubt he owes the credit to the Tamil film director Cheran as well. After all its Cheran's Tamil film, 'Autograph' which inspired him to make the Kannada remake. This was evident at the function which was held at Bangalore where Cheran was honoured by Kannada actor cum director Sudeep. Mr Cheran came in praise of Sudeep for making a hit out of a remake which is not so easy. While Sudeep thanked the crew and audience for the support of his film, he said he would take only 50% credits for the film, the rest would go to Cheran.

Govt takeover rules violative, says pvt school mgmts

The Karnataka governments take over rules of private educational institutions are posing serious risks to the private school managements. The education department has notified in its draft rules that the government can takeover the management of any educational institution on a one month's prior notice. However there is no mention on what justification the government can takeover the management of these institutions. This covers all private schools from primary to secondary schools in the state. In response to the draft notification, the Associated management of primary and Secondary schools in Karnataka have asserted that the rules as violative of the rights.

Microsoft plans 2000 training centers in State

Software and IT major, Microsoft Corporation in joint corporation with the Karnataka government is heading for opening 2000 training centers across Karnataka. This will be mainly focused on setting up knowledge centers for the villages in Karnataka. This included opening "raith samparka kendras" equipped with information technology facilities, informed Microsoft India Chairman to Karnataka Chief Minister. The CM has urged the firm to look beyond Bangalore and open centres in places like Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Hassan that would better offer employment opportunities to the local people.

CM clears his stand on IT -BT industry

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who came in with sharp comments on the IT and BT sectors in the State, softened his stand on the issue the very next day saying that he was only referring to the rich-poor divide due to the globalization and was not against the industry. “ What I meant was that the government along with the problems of IT and BT industry is also concerned about the needs of poor in Bangalore.”, said CM. He also added that the IT-BT sectors were also helping the economy and there is no need for them to have any uneasiness.

Shishya is a film themed on the story of underworlds. But the movie carries a lot of violence and bloodshed. Newcomer Deepak plays the title role of Shishya who does a satisfactory performance. Chytra is impressive. Siva Samaya’s dialogues are catchy. Director Vasu has managed to keep the tempo of the film though the film has few hitches here and there. Rangayana Raghu, Jai Jagdhish, Padma Vasanti, Pramila Joshy etc casts in the film.

People will vote Cong back to power: Dharam

Former Chief Minister Dharam Singh stated that the ongoing political situation in Karnataka would let the State go into Assembly elections within six months as the newly formed government was not functioning properly. In that case, the Congress party was confident that the people would vote the party back into power, said Dharam while addressing to the media persons in Gulbarga. Gopi directed by G K Muddhuraj is the remake of the Telungu film, Murari. The Kannada version has Murali and Gowri playing the lead pair. The story takes you back to the old world of superstitions and curses. Murali comes out with outstanding performances. Gowri also is impressive. Umashri, Dodanna, Ashok, Loknath etc casts in the film. B A Madhu offers some catchy dialogues. Music is average. Though the director keeps it quiet exact to the original, the Telugu version made it better.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in State to get more funds

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) project for 2006-07 in the State has been granted Rs 700 crore by the Center for the next year. There has been a 70% rise in the Center’s funds this time compared to the last year. This was announced by the Center government as a part of its education aid. Apart from this an additional 25% of what the Centre has allocated for the project will be contributed by the State government. Under SSA, the Center has also agreed to build 15000 classrooms for Karnataka. SSA would also set up special programs for the minorities and backward districts of the State.

Jagdish not happy as Madana faces trouble

Jai Jagdish's directorial debut 'Madana' has landed into trouble recently with the censor board asking for removal of some scenes from the film. According to the director the film shows some true scenes from the real life which includes portrayal of a corrupt police officer. The censor board had said that the police officers could not be shown disreputably in any film. Proposal on Bengalooru may fall off

The earlier government’s proposal for renaming of Karnataka capital, Banaglore to Bengalooru has not made any progress with the present CM, Kumaraswamy not showing any initiative towards it. He had earlier mentioned that he would go for the name change if the people really wanted it. But so far nothing has been done on this regard. The Kannada culture circles have been pressing the CM for the suggested renaming but there are also inside talks that the proposal may fall off as it was made by the earlier chief Minister, Dharam Singh.

CET not to have negative marks this year

There is some good news for the students aspiring to get an admission through CET. This year’s Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to the various professional courses will not carry any negative marks in its evaluation process. This is being introduced for the first time in CET. Earlier 0.25 marks were deducted for every wrong answer which won’t be there this time. It is also noted that the ranks list for medical and dental courses will be published only on basis of those who secure 50% marks taken together in PCB subjects in both qualifying exams as well as the CET (40% in case of SC/ ST/OBC). Hence those who score less than 50 % together in the PCB subjects in CET exams won’t be awarded any rank for medical courses. While the rank list for engineering and technology courses will be published in respect of those who secure 45% in the optional subjects in the qualifying exams, irrespective of marks obtained in the PCM subjects of CET (40% in case of SC/ ST/OBC).

Preethi Eke Bhoomi Melide

Budget proposal for Blore-Chennai expressway

The Union budget has proposed for an access controlled express highway between Bangalore and Chennai. Apart from this, building townships in Karnataka are also being planned in the budget. Finance Minister has also announced RS 100 crore funds for the premier research institute, Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore for developing it to an institute of world class repute. He also said that the industrial bids were called for the Power plant project for coastal Karnataka(at Tadri near Karwar).
