Bomb hoax calls creates alarm

Anxiety prevailed in the Bangalore city after the media receiving fax messages claiming that terrorists would launch bomb attacks in the city. People received messages on their mobiles saying that there were bomb threats in shopping malls and IT companies. There were many such hoax calls in the city. Police conducted searches and did not find any explosives. Following the IISc shootout, the threats are being taken seriously. However there is no need to panic and security has been beefed up all over the city, say police officials.

Special trains during Melmaruvathur fest

The South Western Railway will be running special trains to overcome the rush due to the Melmaruvathur festival. There will be special trains that would provide two services on Dec 31st and Jan 8th that would leave from Bangalore City at 6:45pm and would reach Melmaruvathur on the next day at 2:30am. From Melmaruvathur trains would leave at 5:45pm on Jan 1st and Jan 9th and will reach Blore at 4am next day.

There were early warnings of possible attack

Sources indicate that there were early warnings from the Intelligence Bureau of possible attack by the militant groups including the Indian Institute of Sciences and some IT firms in Bangalore. Security agencies were informed of suspected attacks on targets like IT parks particularly in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Meanwhile government sources said that the IISc shootout looked like an act of terror and it was too early to say which group is responsible for the attack. Tight security measures have been taken and the Bangalore police have sealed all entry and exit points of the city to check the getaway of the culprits.

Terrorist attack at IISc; State wide alert

One scientist is reported to have been killed and six others injured after an intruder opened fire in a shootout at the campus of Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. State wide alert has been called out following the incident which is suspected to be a terrorist attack. Scientists were heading for a seminar while the attack took place outside the Tata auditorium.The victim has been reported as a Professor from IIT Delhi.

Congress triumphs at panchayat polls

Congress has gained supreme victory at the zilla and taluk panchayat elections in rural Karnataka winning majority of the seats in the elections. The coalition patner JD(s) comes in the next position while throwing the opposition BJP far behind in the contest. The zilla panchayats which Congress has won majority include Bangalore Urban, Udupi, Belgaum, Haveri, Davangere, Gadag, Uttara Kannada, Raichur, Kolar, Koppal& Kodagu.

State fund for Cable car at Shravanabelagola

With the Mahamastakabhishekha festivities ahead the Karnataka government has decided to fund Rs. 2.5 crores towards Cable car project at Shravanabelagola. This has come after the approval the Archaeological Survey of India allowing a temporary cable car on the Vindyagiri hills for transport of guests and pilgrims across the hills. The Mahamastakabhishekha event will be held from February 8 to 19. The Centre government has released Rs. 118 crores for the event celebrations.

CM celebrates 69th birthday

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh has turned 70 on Sunday. The Chief Minister celebrated his 69th birthday at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh along with his family members and few Congress leaders. Mr Singh who is heading the States coalition government has completed 19 months in power. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Governer T.N. Chaturvedi etc were among those who greeted him on his birthday.

Govt agrees on draft for power purchase from Nagarjuna

The State Government has given approval for the draft agreement on the purchase of power for the electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) from the Nagarjuna Power Corporation. Five of the power supply companies have been included in the pact. The State Government has also approved to a sum of Rs. 400 crores each fiscal year towards payment by the ESCOMs.

State in need of more IT professionals

Karnataka will need one million IT professionals by 2010 says IT Secretary M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda while addressing an international conference. He also said that the State expects to make its software exports to $20 billion by 2010. And for this the IT companies will require skilled IT graduates, not only engineers other skilled IT workers too. Software exports from Karnataka accounts to one-third of India's IT exports.

Vishnuvardhan honoured with doctorate

Kannada superstar Vishnuvardhan is in a fix after Bangalore University deciding to honor the cine star with a doctorate. The award came in recognition for his efforts and contributions to the film industry, who is also completing 35 years in the Kannada film world. The actor maintained that he was extremely happy to receive the honour but at the same time asked whether he really deserved the award. Earlier Dr. Rajkumar was also awarded with doctorate from the Mysore University.

Sakha Sakhi

Sakha Sakhi directed by Dayal is the remake of the the Tamil movie 'Tiruda Tirudi' with slight changes in the Kannada version. The film tells the story of two teenage friends is a right mix of romance, sentiments and comedy. However certain scenes and dialogues are of poor taste. Sinil Rao who plays the hero had made reentry into the cine industry after a long gap and has come out with some good performances. Chaya Singh also scores. Kashi, Josimon, Vasu, Sahukokita etc. casts in the film.

More cities to get Kannada names

Soon after the Karnataka governments decision to rename Bangalore to Bengalooru, it’s now the turn of cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Gulbarga, Hubli and Belgaum to get new names which will likely to come in effect from November 1st 2006. This was announced by Chief Minister Dharam Singh. According to the new names Mysore will be known as Mysuru, Mangalore will become Mangalooru, Hubli as Hubballi, Gulbarga as Kalburgi, and Belgaum as Belagavi.

Belgaum readies for panchayat polls

Belgaum district administration is all geared up for the panchayat elections that is scheduled on Monday for the 86 zilla panchayat and 336 taluk panchayat seats in the 10 taluks in the district. Heavy security has been deployed in the district with officers from Gulbarga, Bijapur, Bagalkot and Gadag districts deployed for polling duties. Special forces are also equipped at stations which has been identified as hyper-sensitive polling areas.

Dino Morea to act in Kannada

Reshuffle in ‘horticulture districts’ status

Chikmagalur, Udupi, Kodagu districts were removed out from the list of `horticulture districts' while Gulbarga, Bidar and Hassan were included onto the list under the National Horticulture Mission (NHM). 13 districts in the State had been selected for developing specific horticultural crops. NHM aims to promote organic farming and would help the farmers with marketing and exporting the produce.

BBM courses in government colleges

The Government will soon be offering BBM courses in its colleges. This would give great relief to students who otherwise got to pay high fees for entry into management courses in many of the colleges that offer Commerce degrees. However this will be allowed only in colleges with proper infrastructure facilities. BBM courses are already made available in the Government colleges in Kolar district. The Government has also plans to start 30 Degree colleges that would offer science subjects.

BJP starts campaign in Bellary

BJP party leaders have started the campaign for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections of the Bellary district. Associated with the election campaign Swarana Sandesh Janajagruti Yatra has been launched that has been organized to include all villages in each of the 36 constituencies. The yatra will conclude on December 15. The BJP is also targeting on the coalition Government with songs out on cassettes highlighting the failures of the opposition.

SC gives permit to live bands in Bangalore

A Supreme Court bench has given permit to conduct live bands in restaurants of Bangalore with certain conditions imposed while allowing live band shows. The permit has been given in view of the interest of the members of the Karnataka Live Band Restaurants Association for ensuring their livelihood. The rules imposed include ban to gambling, usage of narcotics, usage of obscene language, shows or posters etc. The licensee is also objected from practicing any other illegal activity.

Diagnostic test to identify mutation genes underway

Diagnostic test to identify mutation genes that may be responsible for hereditary breast cancer are underway. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at Bangalore along with Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology are conducting research on this and has developed a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test to detect the genes that can lead to hereditary breast cancer. It’s been found that 5 to 10 % of spordiac cancers are resulted by mutations in either BRCA1 or BRCA2 and people with mutations in these segments are at higher risk for developing cancer. The PCR test thereby will help to identify women who are at risk of cancer and can be treated effectively at the early stages.

Health insurance scheme for HIV victims

Karnataka soon can claim to have introduced the comprehensive health insurance scheme which is the first of its kind in India which will cover the medical cost of people living with HIV/ Aids (PLHA’s). The programme undertaken by UN’s Development programme will sign an agreement with an NGO in Bangalore which plans to begin the scheme by eary 2006. There is also one scheme planned for the general population in the state. The projects under the scheme would cover the medical cost inclusive of diagnosis & anti retroviral treatment.
