Hubballi turns out a boxoffice hit

Hubballi directed by Om Prakash Rao starring Sudeep, Rakshita in the lead is said to be a big hit at the boxoffice. The action film so far has been well recieved at all the theaters and especially in Bangalore. At Bangalore alone the film is expected to gross over Rs 10 million within the first 3 weeks of its release.

Thananam Thananam directed by Kavita Lankesh is a musical entertainer that gives much importance to classical music. Of course music is the biggest advantage of the film. However the film doesnt seem to have delivered upto the expectations. It lacks a solid story and often drags in pace. Heroines Rakshita and Ramya does justice to their roles. Camera work is marvellous.

Karnataka villages set example

While Karnataka is one of the states where AIDS incidence is high, people of the North Karnataka villages are setting an example by tacking these issues on an efficient manner. The residents of the remote villages like Nevalgi and Hippargi in Bagalkot are forming Self-Help Groups and village health committees and focussing on awareness programmes through school workers and doctors of primary health centres to overcome these problems. "We knew the Government alone could not solve our problems. We had to come forward to sort out these issues and could no longer be dependent on others," say a village official. Besides combating the spread of AIDS and other infectious diseases, the village had also put a ban on child marriages.

C/o Footpath directed by youngest director and child genius Master Kishen is worth a watch for its heart touching story and a thought provoking subject. The film tells the story of a young boy who wants to get to school but is cheated by others and finally he makes it fighting all the odds. Kishen himself as the slum boy breathes life into the character. Dialogues, script,camerawork, music all excels. Other actors Tara, Sourabh Sukla, Jackie Sheroff etc does a neat job in their respective roles.

Butterfly park opens at Bannerghatta Park

Bannerghatta Biological Park is finally all set to open a Butterfly Park which will be inaugurated on Novemeber 25th. The 7.5 acre Butterfly park set up at a cost of Rs 3.81 crore offers a butterfly conservatory, audio visual facility and an exhibition hall. The Park is also home to 42 rare varieties of butterflies and is expected to draw more tourists to the Park. The park will also serve as a central hub for coordinating research and conservational aspects, training, education and rural livelihood using butterflies of peninsular India.

Give more jobs to Kannadigas: CM

While assuring an investor friendly environment and improved infrastructure, Karnataka CM called upon the industry leaders to create more job oppurtunities for the Kannadigas. CM was talking at the launch of the Suvarna Kayaka Udyoga Shikshana Yojane (SKUSY). " Most youths in the State are unhappy that industries are giving jobs to outsiders. I dont believe our youths are short of skills," said Kumaraswamy. He also added that his government was ready to create a conductive environment for the growth of the industries.

Hindustan Zinc's Wind power plant in State likely

Leading zinc producer, Hindustan Zinc is planning to set up a 75MW wind power plant which will either be located at Karnataka or Gujarat. The project which is estimated to be of Rs4billon will be mutiphased project and will be completed during the period 2007-08. Besides the company alos plans to start a debottlenecking project comprising enhancing zinc capacity by 8,8000Mt at its smelters, installation of balancing equipments at Rajasthan mines and setting up of additional 80MW captive power plant.

Muslim quota in police force sought

Karnataka State Minorities Commission in its report to Chief Minister has proposed 15% reservation for Muslims in the police force in communally sensitive areas. This comes in wake of the recent communal violence that hit Mangalore. "The Commission is of the view that in the offices of IGP, DSP, ACP and in sensitive police stations, some of the persons belonging to minority community should be posted as sub-inspector or at least as police constable," the report states. The panel also recommends posting Muslim officers in the posts of deputy commissioner, zilla panchayat, assistant commissioner, head quarters assistant to deputy commissioner in districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Karwar.

Tananam Tananam to premiere at IFFI fest

Kannada filmmaker Kavitha Lankesh's musical entertainer Tananam Tananam will be premiered at the 37th IIFI festival that will be kick off at Goa on Nov 23rd. The Kannada film which features Ramya, Rakshitha,Girish Karnad, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan etc gives much importance to music will be premiered on the second day of the festival under the commercial films category. Girish Kasaravalli's 'Naayi Neralu' is the only Kannada film that will be screened at this year's IFFI under the Indian panorama section.

Crowd throng Talakkad for Panchalinga Darshan

Pilgrims had thronged the temple town at Talakkad in Mysore district to witness the millenium's first Panchalinga Darshana being held from November 20 - 25 . The five temples in Talakad draw large crowds during this event and is expected to be visited by two million pilgrims from across the State. Devotees had queud up outside the temple premises to have darshan from the previous night onwards and many of the vip's including Karnata CM and Dy CM were there among those present to mark the begining of the religious festivities.

Master Kishen makes it to Guinness book

Kannada boy and child prodigy Master Kishen has entered the Guinness book of world records for being the youngest filmmaker by directing the Kannada film, Care of Footpath. The 10 year old has broken the earlier world record of Netherland boy who entered the Guinness book at the age of 13. bollywood actor Jackie Sheroff features in the film along witgh other cast like Saurabh Shukhla, Jayashree etc. The film has won two prestigious awards from the State government including the special award from the Jury committee.

Center denies Maharastra's claim on Belgaum

The Center government has denied Maharashtra's claim on the border areas in Karnataka and termed it as 'unacceptable'. Maharashtra in its suit filed to Supreme Court claimed for the transfer of certain Marathi speaking areas in Karnataka. However the Center in its reply has stated that a certain minimum amount of linguistic overlap is to be expected along the border areas. "It is neither feasible nor desirable to demarcate the borders of villages, taluks and districts in a manner that the people speaking one language can or may be retained in one State only," it said.

Medical colleges in Bidar, Raichur, Shimoga

Karnataka Medical Education Minister has informed that three more medical colleges will be soon set up in Bidar, Raichur and Shimoga districts of the State. Works at these proposed medical colleges were alreadyin progress and is likely to be completed soon. He added that the government was open to the idea of calling private managements to open medical colleges in other districts of Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Gadag, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Chamarajnagar and Koppal which do not have one. He also stated that the Bangalore and Mysore medical colleges would soon be upgraded to autonomous bodies.

Rajeeva is the name of the forthcoming film of director Ravi Sreevasthava. Harish Rai, Vijay, Nagashekhar are also playing lead roles in the film. Rajeeva is being produced by Shobha Rajanna. Also popular Tv artist Ravi Belagere plays a small but important role in the film. Actors Vijaya Raghavendra and Rakshitha also appears in the film with a dance number. The film is likely to reach theaters in December.

Fusion concert in Muscat by Kannada muscians

The event 'Raga ragini' organised by the Karnataka Wing of Indian Social Club in Muscat will present artists performing fusion music,with a blend of classical, folk, light music and movie songs. SC dismisses plea against CM

The petition filed against Karnataka CM alleging for disproportionate wealth was dismissed by the Supreme Court. Rejecting the petition, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the petitioner. Reacting to the court verdict, Karnataka CM said it was a moral victory for him. "If one does not make constructive criticism, one has to face loss of face like this", he said.

Devaraj to enact Ravana

Renowned actor Devaraj has been chosen to enact the role of Ravana in the upcoming Kannada film, 'Prachanda Ravana' based on the theater play by the same name. The decision on whom to be casted in the Ravanan's role was left to the public with the producers asking people to cast their vote by sending SMS. And based on the public suggestions Devaraj was elected to play the role. Reacting to the offer, the actor said that he considered it as a great honour to enact the role of Ravana.

The film is themed on the story of family fueds but told in a hilarious manner. Ambarish as the elder brother and Jaggesh, Ramkumar as the younger ones excels in their respective roles. Aishwarya and Gurlin Chopra, Tara are impressive. Hamsalekha's music is good. Dialogues and well plotted action scenes all makes it a well packaged entertainer.

Over 6000 pilgrims prepare for haj yatra

This year nearly 6600 pilgrims from Karnataka are getting ready for the annual haj yatra. Each participant of Haj Yatra will also be provided with a subsidy of Rs 25,000 and government is making adequate measures for a pleasant pilgrimage to the holy cities. The pilgrimage will start with the first flight for the pilgrims leaving from Bangalore on the third week of Novemeber. This year there has also been a rise in the number of pilgrims quota allocated to the State.

Kannada in CBSE schools: Minister

The State government is moving on with its plans to make Kannada compulsory in CBSE schools in the State from the next academic year. This was informed by the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education. He also said that English would be made compulsory in schools from Standard 1 onwards. He also maintained that those schools which are given licence to conduct Kannada medium of instruction and found violating the rule by conducting English medium will be withdrawn licences.

Ravi Shastry directed by M.S. Rajashekhar is a big let down at the boxoffice. The film which was the remake of the Tamil film 'Idhu Namma Aalu'. Though the film's original was a hit in the Tamil, the Kannada version fails to do so. Many of the scenes in the film hurts the sentiments of the high and low caste communities portrayed in the film. Ramachandran is good in his role however its Sneha who steals the show all the way. Music is good. But the lyrics seems to be a mismatch.

Sirivantha tops among recent Kannada films

Among the recent releases in Kannada, S. Narayan's Vishnuvardhan, Shruti starrer has emerged at the top position at the boxoffice. Indusrty experts say that though the film had a slow initial response, the films summed up its collections in the following
weeks and promises to come up as the big hit of the year. The other films that managed to hit at the boxoffice are the Ramya starrer Jothe Jotheyalli and Darshan's 'Thangigaagi'.

More shopping malls on the way

The retail industry is on a high in the country and especially in the IT city, Bangalore. Over the last years lots of malls had mushroomed in the city but many industry experts still feels that these malls are not just enough to cope with the increasing demand in the shopping markets. According to reports as many as 10 malls spanning from 5,00,000 sq ft-10,00,000 sq ft built up area are likely to come up in Bangalore over the next couple of years. And many more malls are also likely to be set up in tier 2 cities of Karnataka like Mangalore, Mysore, Belgaum and Hubli.

LPG supply in State hit by poor roads

There could be a scarcity in cooking gas supplies in the State over the coming days. This is mainly attributed to the bad road conditions between the Bangalore and Mangalore Highway. Over the past one month there had been limited supply of LPGs from the Mangalore port to the filling plants in the state due to the poor roads. Added to it the recent refinery fire at Jamnagar is also said to have an averse effect on the supplies. And distribtors claim that there had been a heavy backlog over the recent days and the shortage would mean delayed supply of gas cylinders to consumers by another 5-20 days.

Helmet rule for 2 wheelers comes into effect

Finally the much delayed helmet rule is made compulsory from Novemeber 6th in Bangalore city. Though the rule came into effect from Nov 1st the relaxations in enforcing it were extended to Nov 6th so as to give enough time for the public to purchase helmets. There will be strict penalties for those offending the rules. First time offenders will be fined Rs 100 while those repeating violations will be penalised Rs 300.

Indian starts Bangalore-Male flights

The country's national airliner, Indian has satrted direct flights to Maldives from Bangalore on Thursday. The flight will operate five days a week except on Tuesdays on and Fridays. The IC 965/966 flight will leave Bangalore at 10:30 am and reach Male at 12:00 pm. The return flight from Male will leave at 12:50pm and will arrive Blore at 3:20pm. The airlines is offering a special introductory fares at Rs 10000 for Blore-Male-Blore trip.

Shivarudrappa named as Rastra Kavi of State

Poet and litereay personality G S Shivarudrappa has been named as the third Rastra Kavi of Karnataka. The announcement was made by Chief Minister and came in on the day that marked Suvarna Karnataka celebrations. Dr Shivarudrappa is the third litterateur to be honoured with the title after Mangeswara Govinda and Kuvempu. Expressing his happiness for being chosen for the title, the poet said that it was a honor for Kannada language and the people of Karanataka as well.
