SC rejects review petition on KIOCL mines closure

The petition seeking re-examination on the courts order asking the State government to close down the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) from December 31onwards was rejected by the Supreme Court. The review petition was filed by Kudremukh Shram Shakti Sangathan which stated that the closure of the mines would leave the 2,500 workmen of the company jobless. The Court had earlier asked for the close down of the mines after the Central Empowered Committee (EWC) found that the mining was illegal as it was against the interests of the National Park.

Kuvempu Kannada Software Centre to be delayed

The opening of the Rastrakavi Kuvempu International Software and Technology Center which was expected for launch in June 2005 is further delayed as the Information Technology Department of the Government had sought out some explanations for its sanctioning of funds. The Centre at the Mansagangotri campus in Mysore is aimed to develop and promote newer software technologies for Kannada and to allow efficient use of the language in the digital medium. This would include usage of Kannada in electronic publishing, e-books, e-governance, web contents, office applications etc. It also plans cost free transfer of these technologies to industries and NGO’s.

Love Story

Love Story directed by Bharati Kannan is the remake of the hit Kamal Hassan starrer Telungu film ‘Maro Charitra’. The movie was later remade with Kamal in Hindi as ‘Ek Tuje Ke Liye’ which also turned out to be a superhit. The film is about a young couple who falls in love despite of their varying backgrounds. Though the storyline remains the same, the Kannada version lags behind in its narration and intensity. Mayur Patel is notable in the quarrel scenes while Tanu Roy still needs to refine her skills. Music by S. A Rajkumar; Love Story has some memorable songs like Nanna Ninna Premageethe.

IFFI more Bollywood centric:Kannada film industry

Celebrities from the Kannnada film industry blamed this year’s International Film Festival of India (IIFI) for being inclined to Bollywood industry and thereby neglecting the enormous contributions of regional cinema to the Indian film Industry. Meanwhile there were wide accusations that the opening ceremony was of below standards. Leading Kannada film star Tara and renowned directors from the Kannada film industry complained for not mentioning any of the States contributions during the opening ceremony of the fest.

Fisheries harbour at New Mangalore Port soon

A fisheries harbour is soon to come up at New Mangalore Port which will be built at a cost of Rs. 40 crores which will be funded by the Union and State government on an 80:20 basis. New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) authorities have aleady spent Rs. 44.32 lakhs on conducting feasibility and technical studies for the project, which is expected to be implemented at the Kulai-Chitrapura village on the Arabian coastline.

Nammmana is about a young man who fights for justice and anticorruption and in so doing becomes the hero of the local people. Sudeep in the main lead shines with his performance. Anjali Jhaveri looks charming in her role. Gurukiran scores with the music. Master Chandan is superb. Others Avinash, Kishori Ballal, Sadhu Kokila etc play their part well. Sudhakar’s camerawork is average while the songs are shot well. Shankar’s direction and narration seems okay but at times gives overcoverage to the hero. The strong dialogues are definetly a boost to the film. Produced by Bala Muthaiah & Murugappan, Nammanna is an ideal entertainer for the Sudeep fans.

Ranji Trophy: Kumble to play for Karnataka

The Indian leg spinner from Karnataka Anil Kumble will be playing for the state in the Ranji Trophy after a gap of 5 years while Karnataka will take on Railways in the season opener. Kumble’s presence has certainly given a boost to the Karnataka team who think it’s a challenge playing against the defending champions’ first-up. Sujit Somasundar, the captain of the Karnataka team thinks that Kumble being there will give more inspiration to the team than just wickets.

Registration of nursery schools made mandatory

The Karnataka government has decided to go tough on the KG registration making it mandatory for all all the nursery schools operating in the State to be registered with the State Education Department from the next academic session. Those nursery and pre nursery schools not registered will now be considered illegal.The education department has also made it compulsory for the government and unaided schools to reserve 50% seats for girl students from the next academic year. According to the new guidelines only when required number of girls is not available these seats could be given to the boys.

State Govt. dissolves Belgaum City Corp.

The Karnataka government has dissolved Belgaum City Corporation and appointed district deputy Commissioner as its administrator. This decision for dissolution came in as the Corporation failed to function in accordance with the Muncipal Corporation Act, which alleges that the BCC has acted against the interests of the Corporation and misused its powers. The situation was prompted in the wake of BCC passing the resolution demanding the merger of Marathi speaking areas of Belgaum with Maharastra.

3 Kannada films for IFFI; Tara ‘thali girl’

Kannada’s pride and this year’s national award winning actress Tara, will be the 'thali girl' for the opening ceremony of 36th International Film Festival which is to be held in Goa starting from November 24th. Bipasha Basu is the other thali girl chosen for the opening function. Three Kannada films are chosen among those films to be screened during the 11 day film festival. This includes Haseena and Beru which will be screened in the Indian Panorama competition while Rishi will be filmed under the mainstream film section.

Kalam sets missions for Karnataka

President A P J Kalam placed an 11 point plan before the State for development of Karnataka into an economically developed model state in the next 4 years. President on a 2 day visit in the State inaugurated the celebrations of ‘Suvarna Karnataka’ to mark the 50th year of reorganization of the state. Kalam also emphasized on aiming 100% literacy in the state by 2012 and increasing the per capita income of the state to Rs 75,000 by 2009. He also stressed on the need to develop tier two cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli- Dharward, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Madikeri etc.v and urged the government to make Bangalore a ‘development facilitator’ of world class.

1 lakh Kannada books to be digitalised

As apart of the Suvarana Karnataka programme the State government is implementing digitalization of 1 lakh Kannada books. The State will fund Rs 20 lakhs for this. The project will be done under the Library project of the US based Carnegie Mellon University along with the support of the Center. The books will be digitalized and the content will be posted on the internet to help Kannadigas across the world access and read the full text of books. The government has also launched a project on setting up libraries at the educational centers in the slum areas of Banglore.

“We are not a road building corporation”: Infy chief

Infosys Chairman and chief mentor N R Narayan Murthy when asked about the IT major’s contribution towards states infrastructure commented that the company was not a road building corporation and stated that it was the governments’ responsibility to build the roads and not with the corporates. He also said that recent arguments over the infrastructure issues between the government and the IT industry will not have any impact on the firm or on the flow of investments into the IT sector.

German Technology in Upper Bhadra project

The Karnataka Government has plans to use the German Technology in the Upper Bhadra project which could be capable of protecting the forest area. Water Resources and Transport Minister has said. The German Technology uses the technique of sending water through tunnels which could carry water to the command areas. This could maintain the safe ecology of the forest areas. The government had taken this initiative as environmentalists showed their opposition towards the irrigation project and a high level Committee is being reviewing on the issues related to this.

State’s proposal for Article 371 amendment

Karnataka government had proposed to the Center to amend Article 371 of the Constitution to enable the State to take up developments of the most backward districts. Chief Minister Dharam Singh has said that the Prime Minister is studying the State’s proposal on this regard. Of the districts being categorised based on regional imbalances Tumkur has been identified the most backward and few others been considered backward. The amendment would help special grants for development of these districts.

B’lore students design Formula style racing car

Twenty students from the Bangalore based R V College of Engineering had designed and developed a Formula style racing car. The single seater car is built on a 660 cc Yamaha engine was developed by “Project Ashwa”, a team of mechanical engineering students. The team has set off with the project to participate in an international competition held at Melbourne from Dec1st. The project took almost a year with over Rs 20 lakh been spend towards the research and development wing of the racing car. Now the team along with the car is getting readied to take part in the contest in Australia.

No going back on Metro Rail Porject: CM

Bangalore Metro Rail Project will soon be a reality, asserts Chief Minister Dharam Singh. Mr Singh said that the project has been given clearance from Center’s PIB and the Planning Commission and will soon be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. There will be no rethinking of the State government’s decision on the project, he said. Due to the cost escalation, Center will also be requested to provide the additional funds needed for the project.

Govt claims Rs 600 crore losses on VAT

The State Government claims a loss of Rs 600 crore till September following the introduction of value added tax (VAT) system. Finance Minister Sindhia said that the government had sought full compensation from the Center for the losses and also stated that the State would have lost Rs 1000 crores if it had not made the claim. The Centre is verifying the declaration before finalising the compensation due to the State.

State may ban lotteries completely

Cholera outbreak in Gokak

Many people from villages of Nandagon, Khanapur, Mutnal, Savalagi villages of Gokak taluk is being treated for cholera after consuming dirty drinking water from the reservoir of Ghataprabha river. Over 40 people are affected by the epidemic in the region. The villagers argue that the excess sand lifting from the river back waters has made the water polluted and they had informed the district administration on this. Nandagon Gram Panchayat is building a drinking water tank on the village boundaries but is not yet complete.

Public anger fumes in Belgaum

Following the assault on theBelgaum District Mayor in Bangalore, bandh was called by Maharastra Ekkikarana Samiti in the Belgaum District which put life to a complete halt in the city. Educational and business organizations, private and public transport including inter-State and inter-district bus services came to a stand still. A memorandum condemning the attack and demanding action against the guilty was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner by the activists. Central team assess flood damage in State

A 7 member team from the Center had visited the various rain hit areas including several districts to assess on the damage caused by the heavy rains and floods in the various parts of the State. The team visited affected areas in Bangalore, Bidar, Belgaum, Gulbarga, Raichur, Hassan, Mandya, and Mysore districts. The team reported the disaster as very severe and said it would submit an appropriate report to the Center on the damage.

Attack on Belgaum Mayor in Bangalore

Belgaum Mayor and two others were attacked and manhandled by the actvists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike at the Legislators Home in Bangalore. The activists attacked in protest against the resolution being supported by the Belgaum Corporation Council demanding the merger of Belgaum, Nippani and Khanapur with Maharastra. The Mayor was in Bangalore to attend an official meeting. Bundh has been called on in Belgaum in protest the assault on the Mayor.

The famous tourist destination near Mysore, Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary Mysore is under constant vigil after the fresh outbreak of bird flu in China. With the onset of the migrating season, many migratory birds are reaching the sanctuary from all over the world. Officials say they are on high alert and keeping a watch on the migratory birds. Specimen samples of the birds from Mysore and Mandya districts are being collected for testing and so far there is no incidence of any bird flu.

Mangalore College to start PG course in fisheries

Comicorm had revenues of $35.5 million and operating margins of 14% during the financial year.

State to bring in law to curb Naxals

Tension continues in Mandya village

Routes include M M Hills –Gopinatham, M M Hills-Nagamalai, B R Hills-Krishnaiahyana Katte, Bedaguli-Jodikeri-Bailur, Bheemeshwari-Sulegere, and Ponnachi-M M Hills. The forests will be opened for the tourists from December, once it gets the consent from the State government on this regard.

Bangalore International Center to be launched

Oral cancer more among State’s rural population

The 34th Karnataka State Dental Conference called on the dentists to create oral heath awareness among the rural population in the state. Facts reveal that 90% of the oral cancers diagnosed in the State were found among the rural people and majority of them were related to tobacco chewing. Seismograph centre in Mysore soon

To help with accurate information on earthquakes, a seismograph centre will soon be set up in Mysore to monitor the seismic activity in the area. This was informed by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell. Land for the same has been obtained and the preliminary works are underway which is expected to get completed in 2 months. Presently, Karnataka has only one seismograph for the entire state which is operated by the National Institute of Rock Mechanics in Kolar Gold Fields.

Tremors at Kolar Gold Fields creates panic

With the prices of riubber expected to go up the State Rubber Board is planning to intensify its rubber cultivation in Dakshina Kannada for the next 10 years. To the existing 15,000 hectars of rubber land in the district, the Board plans to add another 10,000 hectars of land for rubber plant cultivation in Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia taluks in Mangalore and Karkala, Kundapur taluks in the Udupi district. The new move from the Board comes with the World Bank projecting a major rise of prices for industrial rubber during the next 10 to 15 years.

‘Classical language’ status for Kannada will be sought: CM

On giving away the Rajyotsava awards, Chief Minister Dharam Singh said that the state government would send a delegation to the Center to seek ‘classical language’ status for the Kannada language. Stating the significance of the language which has over a 1,500 years history he said that Kannada was developed without the influence from other languages which makes it eligible for the ‘classical language’ status. He also said that he had written to the Prime Minister on this regard.

Preparations are underway for the Hampi Utsav 2005 that will begin on November 3rd. Hampi, the world famous heritage site will host the 11th edition of the event which would stage Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage. The event will attract lots of international and domestic tourists which would reveal the splendor and tradition of the royal Vijayanagar kingdom. Various cultural and literary programs will be held and over 5000 artists are expected to take part in the events. Associated with the Hampi Utsav, a 2 day Anegondi Utsav is also held from Nov 4th.

Boating restarts at Ranganatittu Bird Sanctuary

With flood water levels diminishing, boating has resumed at the major tourist spot Ranganatittu Bird Sanctuary near Mysore which was closed due to the recent floods. Boatings were suspended as the Bird Sanctuary got flooded with the release of water from the neighbouring Krishnaraja Sagar dam. The Sanctuary is located at the downsteream of the KRS dam in Cauvery basin. Many of the migratory birds have returned to the Sanctuary and with the boating facility reopened, visitors can now watch the exotic birds. With November the breeding season will start and by March-April as many 25,000 birds can be watched here.
