Cauvery: State to seek Center's help Tuesday, February 27, 2007 | MP
Disappointed over the Cauvery issue, The Karnataka government is all set to take the issue to the Parliament. The various MP's of the state is already making plans to take it up to the House for serious discussions. The recent all party meeting which were attended by over 80 leaders from various political parties to discuss over the verdict had pressurised the State govt to reject the Tribunal award and also suggested to adopt a resolution for the rejection of the verdict. "We have decided to exhaust all legal remedies to secure justice for the state," said Karnataka CM clearing his stance.

Kannada industry will be witnessing another star wedding with popular talents set to enter wedlock. Kannada actress Rakshita who got engaged to filmmaker Prem will be tying the knot on March 9th. The duo will be getting married at the Bangalore's Mahalakshmi Kalyana Mantap in Rajarajeshwari Nagar. The couple were in the news after the launch of the Prem's hit film, Jogi. Prem will be making his debut as a hero with his own film, Preethi Yeke Bhoomi Melidhe which also features Rakshita.

After Meera Jasmine, popular Malayalam actress and award winner Navya Nair is foraying into Kannada films. Navya is already known to the Tamil industry very well. Now she is all set to refine her acting skills with another South Indian language. She is making her debut in Kannada opposite hero Darshan in the K Madesh directed film, Gaja. She plays a traditional girl who returns from abroad who meets the boy at her native town. Suresh Gowda and P S Srinivasamurthy are producing the film which has already been launched.

Sandeep Malani directed flick, SMS 6260 is a take on the influence of mobiles in today's communication medium. The film is a blend of English and Kannada dialogues. The film has mainly youngsters with Diganth and Janu in the lead roles. The film is themed on the young generations of today who depend too much on cell phones which has much become a part of their day to day life. Romance and comedy is interwoven into the storyline which is evntually nothing more than a pure campus affair.

Duniya directed by debutant Suri has Vijay and Reshmi playing the lead roles. The film tells the story of a slum boy who dreams of coming up in life. The struggles he goes through and the various odds he faces in life forms the core of the story. Music of the film is the highlight. V. Manohar composes the music and also pens the lyrics along with V. Nagendra Prasad and Yogaraj Bhatt. Vijay's acting is impressive. Rangayana Raghu also excels. Satya Hegde's camerawork too deserves a mention. The film deals a realistic story but has its owns hitches.
Gas pipeline to replace cylinders Saturday, February 24, 2007 | MP
Karnataka is soon to give way to natural gas pipelines with the Karnataka government clearing the proposal of Reliance Industries Ltd venture to set up a gas distribution network in the state. If the project gets implemented, natural gas will be supplied to all households through pipelines instead of cylinders. 'The Mukesh Ambani-run Reliance Retail Ltd will invest about Rs.20 billion to set up a retail chain of 51 outlets in the state. Its parent company - will build a gas distribution pipeline across the state covering 60 cities and towns in 27 districts at a cost of Rs.120 billion,' informed Karnataka industries minister.

Kannda film, Sajni directed by Murugesh tells a love story which has nothing refreshing to offer. Dhyan in the lead role pairs with actress Sharmila. Their relationship starts with the couple coming to London to study and join a University there. When they decide to get married, things thake a twist and they finally give it for the family's consent. Its more or less the same like many other love stories. Added to it a poor storyline and limited acting are the weak points of the film. Veteran actors like Anant nag, Avinash all are being unused. Rahman's music also got anything new to claim.

Dadagiri is being directed by Joe Simon and produced under the banner of Sri Sairam Productions. The film is themed on the under world which focuses on the mafia world's influence in politics and power. Krishne Gowda, Seema play the lead roles who represents the youth gang fighting against injustice. Legislator B C Patil plays a key role as underworld don in the film. Also casts Avinash, Shobaraj, Shivaraj and others. Veteran actor Avinash enacts the role of a cruel politician. The director himself pens the story and screenplay for the film.
Ambareesh to lead political protest Wednesday, February 21, 2007 | MP
Kannada actor and politician Ambareesh who had offered resignation of his minister post from the Union Ministry over the Cauvery issue is said to hold a political protest which is to be launched from Mandya. Calling upon other political leaders, farmers and public to join the agitation, to protest against the unfair treatment awarded to the State. Ambareesh also pointed out that the protest would be extended to other parts of Karnataka also. However he had stated that the protest would be a peaceful one.
State's demand for power turned down Tuesday, February 20, 2007 | MP
Facing with power crisis, it was another let down for Karnataka as the State's request for more power was turned down by the Center. Karnataka has sought for an immediate supply of 500 MW of power from the Central grid to meet with the shortage of electricity in the state. However the demand was turned down as the Center expressed its difficulty to provide the same as Maharastra too was facing a severe crisis with power shortage. In the wake of the happenings one can expect for more load sheddings over the coming months.

It seems that the viewers of Tamil Television channels would have to continue waiting for some more while till they can catch up with their popular TV programmes. The Tamil TV channels have been off air in the State ever since the Cauvery verdict was announced in favour of Tamil Nadu particulary in sensitive areas near the Cauvery basin like Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar etc. And cable operators still continue with the protest as they fear that resuming these channels could bring in damage to their equipments in wake of the State wide protests over the Cauvery verdict.
IISc new campus sought in N Karnataka Monday, February 19, 2007 | MP
The prestigious Indian Institute of Science(IISc) is all set for a new campus in the State. However the latest row is now over where to set up the new campus with many a leaders pushing for the premier institute to be set up in the Northern Karnataka region. The present campus in Bangalore is over crowded and expansion of the exisitng campus is difficult too as there is no available land nearby. Besides next year IISc is also celebrating the centenary year and the new campus proposal is part of the event. Already few places for the new campus is being shortlisted and a final decision on this will be taken shortly.

Bhupati directed by S Govind is actor Darshan's show all the way. The film tells the story of a young man wanting to do good for the society by fighting off injustice. Actress Shireen who plays the heroine does an impressive show. Sumalatha as the hero's mom has a mininscule role but does it gracefully. Veteran actor Ashwath excels with fine acting. Music has nothing much to offer but the songs shot are visually appealing. Though the film lacks a good story, its a good watchout for the Darshan fans.
CM discusses Cauvery issue with PM Friday, February 16, 2007 | MP
Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has met with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed over the Cauvery verdict on the water sharing dispute. Karnataka feels that the Cauvery award had done great injustice to the people of Karnataka and is demanding for more water share to the State. Meanwhile an all party meet with the PM is also being scheduled for next week to discuss more on the Cauvery issue. The Karanataka CM had also sought an ad hoc relief of Rs 300 crore from the National Calamity Fund (NCCL) for the 126 Taluqs in Karnataka that are drought prone.
10 day Industrial expo in Davangaree Thursday, February 15, 2007 | MP
Davangaree will host an industrial exhibition cum sale, ‘Karnataka Kalavaibhava-2007’ from February 17th-26th. The venue of the expo will be at the Davangaree high school grounds. The 10 day event will showcase entrepreneurs and artisans in the khadi and handloom sectors and would display items and home products like khadi, cotton, silk, readymade garments, art work, home and cottage industries, condiments, fruit juices, masala eatables, clothes etc. The exhibition is being jointly organised by Department of Industries and Commerce and District Administration.

With the Cauvery issue heating up, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Kannada actor M H Ambareesh had resigned from his post in protest against the unfair treatment awarded to the State by the Cauvery Tribunal. The actor turned politican represented Mandya from Karantaka for the third time in the Lok Sabha and has sent his resignation to the Congress President. He had also forwarded letter to the Prime Minister quoting the reasons that prompted him to quit.

Kannada superstar Upendra is not only open to hero roles but also keen to act in films which portray him in negative roles. However the Kannada star is taking the step trying out negative roles in other language films. Uppi will be doing a Telungu film directed by Rami Reddy in which he will be playing a supporting role of a negative character. His other film is Tamil movie 'Satya' directed by Rajashekhar which will also has the actor featuring a character with negative shades.
8 Ayurveda colleges to get govt grant Monday, February 12, 2007 | MP
Minister for Medical Education has said that the govt would extend grant to 8 of its Ayurveda colleges in the State to facilitate quality education in the research studies associated with these colleges. The Minister was speaking on the sidelines of an inaugural function at the Srinidhi Ayurvedic Research Centre at Alevoor. Stressing on improved focus on Ayruvedic education, he also pointed out that the govenment has appointed 59 lecturers in 3 of its government Ayurvedic colleges over the current year.
Karnataka bundh to be total Monday, February 12, 2007 | MP
Normal life in the state has come to a stand still with the state wide 12 hr Karnataka bundh called by pro Kannada organisations on Monday in the State protesting over the Cauvery verdict. Buses, Taxis, autos will be off the roads. However KSRTC and BMTC bus services will be operating bus services after 6pm. Most of the software firms will remain closed on the wake of the bundh. Trains, flifht services will operate as of schedule. Milk and water supplies will remain unaffected.

Police Story-2 directed by thriller Manju is the sequel to the much appreciated action film, Police Story which was released a decade ago. The new film represents almost the same as its orginal in its story narration and technical excellence. Though action and drama takes the focus, the film lacks in logic and sense. Saikumar in the lead does a mighty performance but looks a little bulky. Sana comes as a change with a negative role. Action lovers would enjoy the film, but defenitely a no-no for the family audience.
Cauvery verdict draws more protests in State Friday, February 9, 2007 | MP
The recent Cauvery Tribunal verdict on the water sharing among the Southern States are drawing more protests across various parts in Karnataka. Protests continued in Mandya and Mysore districts where villagers took out to streets to stage their protest. Similar incidents were also reported in Bangalore where several Kannada activists were arrested when they took their procession over to Rajbhavan. Meanwhile a Karnataka bundh is being called out on Feb 12th against the Cauvery verdict.

Actor Prem seems to be on a signing spree. After the success of his last year release 'Jothe Jotheyalli', the Kannada star has lots of offers coming on his way. The film directed by Dinakar featured him opposite Ramya was much appreciated among the family audience and made good returns at the boxoffice. Lately he had signed for 3 new projects. Hamsalekha is said to make a film by the name 'Gunavantha' with Prem in the lead. The others include renowned director Nagathihalli's films which are to be produced by Ramesh Yadav and Dinesh Babu respectively.
Karnataka bundh postponed to Feb 12 Wednesday, February 7, 2007 | MP
The state wide bundh called out by pro Kannada organisations in protest against the Cauvery Tribunal verdict has been postponed from Feb 8th to February 12th. Earlier chief Minister had asked the Kannada groups to defer from the bandh in view of the ongoing Aero Inida airshow event. Meanwhile the organisations claim the move to delay the bandh as to allow awareness among the people to make the bandh more meaninful. However essential services like milk supplies, hospitals, medical shops will be withdrawn from the bandh.
Cauvery Tribunal: Karnataka seeks verdict review Monday, February 5, 2007 | MP
Responding to the Cauvery Tribunal order passed today, Karnataka's Deputy CM has said that the State would seek review of the verdict on water sharing issue. The Tribunal on its decision, allotted Tamil Nadu 419 thousand million cubic feet of water out of 740 tmcft available in the basin while Karnataka's share has been fixed at 270 TMC feet. However, the actual release by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu would be only 192 tmcft annually. As per the decision, Kerala would get 30 tmcft water share while Pondicherry's share would be 7 tmcft.
State on alert ahead of Cauvery Tribunal order Sunday, February 4, 2007 | MP
Ahead of February 5th's final court order on the Cauvery Tribunal, high security has been deployed in and around Bangalore. The final verdict will be pronounced tommorrow which will bring an end to the 16-year-long process to resolve the inter-state dispute over sharing of the river waters among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry. To meet with the impact of the verdict and to maintain law and order, the State's Home Department is also geared up with necessary steps to ensure peace and protect the State's interests. Additional forces had been arranged in all sensitive areas.

Vidhyarthi directed by T Nagachandra is a film themed on the backdrop of college campus. The film has Tarun Sudhir and newcomer Nikitha in the lead roles. The film is well taken and the message is propogated in a simple manner. Senior artists Thara, Avinash do justice to their roles as well. Patnaik's music is soothing. Das's camerawork could have been better. The film also seems to be little slow in pace.
New English-Konkani dictionary Friday, February 2, 2007 | MP
The Mangalore based Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is coming up with a complete English-Konkani dictionary for the help of the Konkani speaking community. This dictionary offers a wide variety of terms with around 26,000 words. The Konkani language is spoken widely in the Konkan region of the country including Goa, south coastal Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Karnataka itself has over 45 pc of Konkanies residing in the State. The new dictionary provides the exact meaning of English words in Konkani and offers to help the younger generation of Konkanis.
Belgaum set for World Kannada Meet Thursday, February 1, 2007 | MP
Belgaum is all set for the World Kannada Meet that is to be held from February 23rd. The State government has already released Rs 5 crore towards remodelling and development of the city for the 3 day conference. Another proposal for Rs 84 crore is also being made to be spent on the development works for the event. Several theater events including a rangotsava is also being planned to be held associated with the meet. To meet the demands of accomodation of guests, the government is even promoting the concept of 'namma mane namma athithi' to provide accomodation to the visitors.
