Bangalore University library goes digital

Bangalore University Library has become the State’s first e-library by introducing a e-library project by digitising a set of over 3.6 lakh books in the library. Apart from this the programme also provides electronic access to general reference material. Visitors surfing the library site can also get searchable digital catalogue of 1.3 lakh titles, both within the college’s intranet and the Internet. The project also extends its services to the Legislature Library that is linked to the libraries of the Bangalore University and Parliament. The university also plans to generate a network of libraries of its affiliated colleges with the help of a library networking software.

Veteran Kannada actor Rajkumar, who was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital and Heart Institute in Bangalore on Monday morning, following chest pain is getting better. He was under observation in the ICU at the hospital. His condition is said to be stable. His physician said that he and his family are coping well. The recent death of Raj’s brother, Varadaraj is said to have upset the 77 year old actor considerably.

Pavitra Lokesh is the main character in Girish Kasaravalli’s new film, Nayi Neralu which is readying for release soon. The movie focuses on reincarnation as subject and the actress says she didn’t have much homework for the film. She just followed what the director had asked her, says the actress who has high regard for the director himself. 'I didn't do this film for any award. Acting in a Girish Kasaravalli's film is itself an award’, admits Pavitra who is doing something a very unusual film perhaps for the first time. The movie deals with a complex subject like reincarnation which has been adapted from writer S.L. Byrappa’s novel. The film has already made news representing many International film festivals.

Water crisis:Sai Baba assures Rs 1000cr to State

Spiritual leader, Sri Satya Sai Baba has assured to provide Rs 1000 crore to Karnataka State towards implementation of drinking water projects in the Bellary District of the state. With summer set in, many of the villages in the state are facing severe water shortage crisis. The districts of Tumkur, Chitradurga, Kolar, Bagalkot, Bidar, Gulbarga, Haveri regions are already facing harsh deficiency in drinking water. The quality of drinking water also is poor in many of the villages. Though the State government is trying out to provide more water to these areas, the supply has been less in many of the villages. Over 600 villages probably need water supplies through tankers.

Karnataka budget will be pro-farmer: Govt

The Karnataka Government announced that the states budget for 2006-07 would be pro-farmer. The coalition government will present its first budget on March 20th . The govt said that it would announce new policies with improved allocation for agricultural, horticultural and animal husbandry activities. “ No new taxes will be levied”, said Dy CM Yeddiyuruppa who also made suggestions on reduced tax on petrol and diesel. He also said that the BJP and the JD (S) were confident that the "mistakes" that ended the partnership between the Congress and the JD (S) would not happen again.

Sunil Kumar Desai’s Ramya Chaitra Kaala is a lovestory told in a village set up of Malnadu. Shyam Sundar’s music is excellent. Desai has used less known artistes for his movie. Sandeep, Nandita, Manasi, Reshma, Rahul etc casts in the film. Scenes shot in Sirsi, Yana, Sathoddi Falls and Maladu are striking adding color and beauty to the film. The Uttara Kannda culture and local dialects are well brought in. But the film drags in pace. Desai could have improved the film with a better narration.

Five eminent writers from Karnanka were selected for the Kannada Sahitya Academy awards that was announced lately. This include Krishnamurthy Kittur from north Karnataka, Dr. R.V. Bhandari from Uttara Kannada is a teacher by occupation who have done many novel and poetry works. Others honoured were Kalegowda Nagawara, Shashikala Veeraiah Swamy from Bijapur, who excels in modern poetry, and H. Girijamma of Davangere. The academy also released the list of Book prizes in 18 categories for 2004.

NRIs to invest Rs. 250 crores on Mangalore city development

The NRIs around the world has agreed on to invest Rs. 250 crores that will be focus on Mangalore city development.The project will be implemented with support from the government and the NRIs have also requested the govt. to contribute a significant sum towards the project. The money raised will be spend on developing a knowledge zone,city zone along with tourism, industry, information technology, port, Special Economic Zone etc. Tourism zone will be located around the beaches, Tanneerbavi and Panambur.The plan also unveils improving Kadri Park with theme gardens, water fountains, a green belt, water bodies, sand pits and a children's park.

In the wake of the recent birdflu outbreak in the country, Karnataka as a part of its precautionary measures is keeping a close watch on the migratory birds reaching its bird sanctuaries. The state houses five bird sanctuaries including the popular Ranganathittu bird Santuary at Mandya Dt. The others are Gudvi (Sirsi), Mandagadde (Shimoga), Ghataprabha (Gokak) and the Peacock sanctuary (Adichunchunagiri). The premises of the sanctuaries are chemically sprayed to check the disease and situations are monitored constantly to avoid the spread of the disease.

State rejects reports of bird flu deaths

Following reports of deaths of mass number of chickens in a poultry farm in Shimoga district, the Karnataka government has denied bird flu as the cause of the deaths. Experts and a team of Animal Husbandary Department visited the farm and identified the cause of deaths as an Infectious Bursal Disease, a common disease affecting poultry. However the sale of chickens in the state has shown a sharp decline following the detection of bird flu in the country.

President calls for UG programmes at IISc

President A P J Kalam who was in Bangalore called on to make the country's premier research institute, the Indian Institute of Science(IISc) to deliver the world class leaders and faculty for the various colleges and universities in India. He asked IISc to be a partner in the World Knowledge Platform. Karnataka wins K S Subbaiah Pillai Trophy

Defeating arch rivals Tamil Nadu by six wickets in the final round of the one day cricket, Karnataka won the K S Subbaiah Pillai Trophy, taking over the South Zone one-day tournament in the final match played at gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad on Thursday. With this win, Karnataka rallies with 24 points leading the South Zone table and qualifies for the knock out tournament. Tamil Nadu is in second place with 17 points. The last time the state has won the title was in 2001-2001 Ranji season.

The Bangalore Metro project is yet to get clearance from the Center which is still studying on the project. A response on this regard from a group of Ministers who is working on the project is likely on February 21st. Meanwhile Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation officials say that they will go on with the work from March. "If the project is approved by the Union Government, the bhoomi puja will be conducted by the end of March," says BMRTL official. The ground work is already in progress with the BMRC acquiring land for the project.

Joint pain disease spreads out at Bellary

Many villagers of Bellary in North Karnataka is suffering from an unknown disease that leads to agonizing joint pain. The first case of the disease was seen in the Siddammanahalli village of Bellary. So far 50-60 vilaagers are reported to have suffering from this disease which is also said to be spreading to the nearby premises like Bailur,Kurugodu and Karoor villages in the district. Health Department is still not able to find the actual carrier of the disease. The disease which was identified as laptospirosis is caused by the lapto bacteria. But however no incidence of this bacteria was found in any of the samples that has been collected from the village

More women BPO staff taking karate courses

CM to persuade SemIndia to reconsider on Fabcity deal

Karnataka loses out Fab city deal to Andhra

Karnataka's run for the $3-billion silicon chip manufacturing facility, Fab City project has come to an end with Andhra Pradesh winning the deal for the project. This was announced by Union IT & COmmunication's Minister Dayanidhi Maran at the India Semiconductor Vision Summit in Bangalore. The chip factory fabrication model city, the first of its kind in India that will be set up in Hyderabad is expected to provide 15 lakh job opportunities. Andhra Pradesh won over Karnataka in providing subsidies and infrastructure facilities for putting up the Fab City.

Kannada Film Producer S P Varadaraju is dead

Kannada film producer and younger brother of actor Rajkumar, S P Varadaraju died on Wednesday in Bangalore. He died following cardiac arrest at a private hospital here. He was 70 and survived by his wife and 4 daughters. Mr varadaraju had produced many Kannada films like Bhootayanna Maga Ayyu, Oda Huttidavaru, Narada Vijaya, Bhoolokadallui Yamaraja etc. Many from the film industry and political circle have expressed grief over the death of Mr Varadaraju.

Govt plans for textile park in Belgaum

The movie recieved warm welcome even at theateres in Mumbai, Poona, Lucknow and New Delhi. The movie which was screened at overseas earned good response from US, Singapore, Newzealand, Korea, Kaula Lumpur, Hongkong, Australia etc. With the success of Amrita Dhhare one can even hope for this Kannada cinema being remade in Hindi.

New govt takes oath; Trust vote on Feb 8

The JD(s)- BJP government has taken over the power with JD(s) leader Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister and B S Yediyuruppa as the Deputy Chief Minister of the State. Mr Kumaraswamy is the 18th CM of the state while Mr Mr Yeddiyuruppa the 5th Dy CM. The new government will seek the vote of confidence on February 8th. But the date may likely be rescheduled due to the Mahamastakabhisheka. BJP will get 18 ministerial bierths while Jd(s) will have 16 posts.

The newly designated Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa asserted that the new government formed under the the new leadership will aim at the all round development of the state. Womens Usty too young to confer honorary doctorates: Governer

Karnataka Governer T N Chaturvedi has rejected the Karnataka State Women’s University, Bijapur proposal to confer honorary doctorates to popular personalities including Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The Governer stated that the university which is yet to give a graduate degree should not first think of awarding honorary doctorates at this stage. However these awards could be considered in the future. The university should first stabilize and earn credibility first, recommended the Governer.

Shravanabelagola all set for historic Jain festival

All preparations are in place at Shravanabelagola which is set for Mahamastakabisheka the head anointing ceeremony marked as a world- renowned religious Jain festival that begins on February 8, 2006. This is celebrated with great pomp and splendour in every 12 years. This historic event that was last held in 1993 is happening again this year which will be witnessed by thousands of devotees from around the globe. Special arrangements are in place to provide drinking water, medical facility and attend to other emergency requirements of pilgrims and tourists.
