Nilekeni to launch UIAI from Karnataka

Nandan Nilekani who is heading the country's Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI) project has chosen Karnataka as the first state to launch the pilot project.

The former Infy Chief who has quit the corporate job to take up the country's ambitious project is now working out plans with the Karnataka state officials to implement the unique identification scheme.

According to UIAI, every resident Indian citizen will be provided with a unique national ID numbers and not a card.

Setback for Somanna

It was mixed emotions for the BJP and Congress at the assembly polls which was held  for the 5 constituencies. However the BJP witnessed some major setback as the state minister V Somanna lost to the elctions.

For Congress too there was much mbarassment as union Minister Mallikarjun Kharge's another son Priyank,  lost the elections in Chittapur. Of the 5 seats BJP and JD(s) won 2 each while Congress bagged one.

Rising swine flu deaths in Blore

More cases of swine flu related deaths have been reported in Bangalore over the last few days, taking the death toll in the city to 11.

So far around 230 people are said to be affected with the disease in  Karnataka with many fresh positive cases reported. Karnataka is also said to have the worst affected where the flu has claimed most number of lives, after Maharastra. 

Meanwhile the country wide toll has reached 45.

Bypolls peaceful; 62pc turnout

The Tuesday's bypolls to the five assembly constituencies of Karnataka was said to be by and large peaceful.

The state witnessed an average voting turnout of 62 percent with Govindrajnagar recording the lowest turnout( 48%) of all constitiencies.

Channapatna had a 73 pc votin followed by Ramnagaram at 71pc. The couting of the votes will be held on Friday, Aug 21st.

Sarvajna statue to be unveiled in Chennai

Following the unveiling of Thiruvalluvar's statue in Bangalore, Kannada poet Sarvajna's statue will be unveiled in Chennai on thursday.

The 16th century philosopher is immensely known for his triplet sayings(tripads), which are delivered in simple Kannada yet very powerful.
The poet's statue will be unveiled at Jeeva Park in Aynavaram, Chennai which will be done by Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Blore weather conductive for flu

 The weather conditions in Bangalore are said to be conductive for swine flu infections, claims National institute of Virology. The damp and cold conditions at this time of the year is also an ideal situation for faster spread of the virus.

Meanwhile the wide spread of the flu virus has put many on fear, with many City schools announcing closure to prevent further spread of the virus.

 To tackle with the situation, the State government has identified many more private hospitals for screening and treatment of the disease.

Govt to go ahead with statue unveiling

Despite protest from various Kannada organisations, the State government is all geared up to to go ahead with the unveiling of Thiruvalluvar's statue in Bangalore.

The move is also supported by political leaders and literary personalities who do not want to mix up the event with other issues relating to Tamil Nadu. The statue of Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar, is scheduled to be unveiled on August 9th, after so many years of stalling the project due to controversies.

Meanwhile some pro kannada groups opposed to this had gone to the extend of declaring a bandh on that day to stage their protest.
