Drop protest on Hongenakal proj:Karunanidhi

Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is pressing the Center government to ask Karnataka to stop opposing on the Hongenakal project.

Karunanidi claimed that the Hongenakal Integrated Water Scheme project was meant to provide drinking water for the people of two districts in Tamil Nadu.

This comes in the wake of Kannada activists protesting against the  Rs.13 billion water supply project in Hogenekal as this would affect the Karnataka's interests in developing it as a tourist spot.

As a part of protests Tamil films being screened in Karnataka were also stopped.

Rahul campaign ends in Karnataka

The Congress campaign in Karnataka ahead of the assembly polls kick started with its sensational leader Rahul Gandhi making a state wide tour which ended on Saturday.

During his 5 day tour the Congress leader visited a wide range of people, youth, tribes reaching out to all kind of voters interacting with students and the youth.

He even called upon the youth to join Congress to provide a stable government.

With Karnataka going to polls in May, Rahul's visit has certainly wooed the Congress workers in the State.

Elections before May end

Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy has informed that the Assembly elections of Karnataka would be held before May 28th. More details regarding this would be announced shortly.

"We are collecting details of the total police force needed and the requirements of the total number of polling stations. Once we complete this excercise, the election dates would be announced." the CEC said.

He also said that in future all of the elections including that to the Parliament would be held based on delimitation of constituencies. This does not include by-elections.

IIM-B hikes fees to Rs 4 Lakh

The premier Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, IIM-B has announced its decision to hike fees to Rs 4 Lakh for its next academics year 2008-09.

"We have decided to hike the fee from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh for 2008-09," said IIMB directorfollowing a meeting of the Board presided by its chairman Mukesh D Ambani. For those students who would be going into the second year (2009-10) will have to pay Rs 5 lakh as fee.

According to the board, the  increasing infrastructure has been cited as the main reasons for the fee hike.

National Youth Games in Blore on May 10-18

The inaugural and first edition of the National Youth Games will be held in Bangalore from May 10 to 18.

The first ever Youth Games for the under-18 youth will be participated by over 6000 athletes in as many as 24 disciplines.
 
The event would also be seen as a selection event for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune in October. The schedule for the event is likely to be rescheduled in case it coincides with the elections in the state, informed an Indian Olympic Association official.

Karnataka drops behind in E-governance

Karnataka, known as the destination city for IT has been ranked far behind when it comes to e-governance.
 
Though the state has been actively promoting the e-governance concept, survey shows that Karnataka has dropped from its No 2 postion last year to No 9 in the recent times. The survey ranked by ./citizens listed Delhi at the top postion  followed by states like Goa, Chattisgarh, Tamilnadu and Kerala.
 
The benefits of e- governance initiatives in the State was affected by the political instability which was identified as the key reason for the  drop of e-governance services in the state.

Rahul Gandhi to steer Karnataka tour

After conducting a 'Discover India' tour in the North, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is heading to the Southern state of Karnataka ahead of the Assembly elections in the State.
 
Rahul is expected to visit as many as 10 districts across the State during his tour that will kick off on March 25th.
 
The 5 day scheduled trip covers Chamarajnagar, Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli, Dharwar, Gadag, Bagalkot, Raichur, Bangalore and Bijapur. The young leader would address public rallies and hold discussions with farmers and youth and focus on issues of unemployment and poverty.

Karnataka implements e-stamping

In an effort to curb fraud practises involved with the system of collection of stamp duty, Karnataka has introduced E-stamping system.
 
The E- stamping project has been initially implemented in Bangalore and will be extended to other areas of the State as well. The system has been implemented by the Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd (SHCIL) which has done similar project for Maharastra.
 
The facility will now be available at sub-registrar offices at Gandhinagar, Jayanagar, Shivajinagar, SHCIL offices at J C Road, Koramangala, Jayanagar, Malleswaram and Lawyer's Association at the Civil Court Complex, Gandhinagar.
 
The government intends to provide the sysytem  to other parts of Karnataka shortly.

Mallya unveils Royal Challengers

The Royal Challengers, the official name for the Bangalore team for the Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched by the franchise owner and liquor baron Vijay Mallya in a city hotel in Bangalore on Wednesday.
 
 Mallya who won the team in an auction worth US$111.6 million has top players like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Jacques Kallis, Zaheer Khan, Mark Boucher, Chanderpaul etc.
 
The team will be led by former Indian captain Rahul Dravid. Venkatesh Prasad will be the team coach while New Zealand's former captain Martin Crowe will be the team's chief cricket officer.
 
The team's jersey is a mix of red and yellow colors. "The colour is familiar with this part of the country and is part of the Karnataka flag," said Charu Sharma, the team's CEO.

New Blore airport to be delayed

The new Bengaluru International Airport Ltd,(BIAL) which was scheduled to open on March 30th could be delayed to another 4-6 weeks.
 
 According to the Airport Authority of India which had submitted in its status report to the civil aviation ministry had informed that it would need more time to install new Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) in the new airport.
 
Further the airport personnels need to be fully trained to operate the equipments which could lead to delay in the opening of the airport. A final decision on the delay in the opening of the airport will be taken after the govt and BIAL officials meet with the Union aviation minister on Monday.

No new taxes in budget

The Karnataka Budget for 2008-09 presented in the Parliament on Tuesday by Union Finance Minister Minister P. Chidambaram proposed no fresh taxes.
 
The budget was presented by the UPA govt as the state is under the Presidents rule. 
 
As per state budget, the total outlay will be Rs.565.42 billion as against the budgeted outlay of Rs.504.66 billion for the current fiscal.

The budget proposed to continue with the exisiting welfare schemes and focused on development of agriculture, irrigation, housing and rural projects.

S M Krishna back to active politics

In an effort to energise the party in the upcoming Assembly elections former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader S M Krishna had resigned as Maharashtra Governor on Wednesday.
 
The veteran Cong leader return back to active politics in the State is expected to boost the party's campaign in the coming elections.
 
However there were mixed reactions within the Cong supporters on Krishna's return. Though Krishna's role is not yet defined some faction in the Cong think the party high command's new move would lead to a power struggle within the party.

Yahoo! labs-Bangalore launched

Internet based web portal giant, Yahoo Inc has launched its new research and development center in Bangalore.
 
The new office being set up in Blore as a part of its expansion drive will be headed by Yahoo! Labs Vice President and head Rajeev Rastogi.
 
The company intends to hire scientists and engineers for its new lab to build new-generation Internet search and advertising technologies. This will help make the internet more simple and relevant and thus make easier for advertisers and users.

Political parties seek polls before May

With the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami visiting Karnataka to review on the upcoming elections, major political parties are pressing for holding early election in the State.
 
The EC will be also meeting various political party leaders today to come up with a schedule for the elections.
 
Meanwhile major parties including BJP and JD (S) are likely to submit petitions to the EC urging not to delay the polls beyond the six-month tenure of President's rule which ends at May. Sources indicate that Congress party is not in favor of early elections though the party has maintained that it is ready to face elections anytime.
