Credits for father, says Kumaraswamy

Welcoming the Finance Minister's proposal for waiver of farm loans, Karnataka former chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy claimed that all the credits for that should go to his father and JD(s) chief Deve Gowda as he had always fought for the farmer's justice. Chidambaram in the Union budget has announced a Rs 60,000-crore relief package for farmers, including complete waiver of loans given to small and marginal farmers. "After 60 years, the Congress has done something for the farmers and this is just a reflection of my father's relentless struggle. It is a victory for his crusade for the farmers in the country," said Kumaraswamy who also indicated that it could have been better if the waiver was irrespective of the farmer's land holdings. --MP
Early polls may be likely

With political parties in the State demanding for early elections, Karnataka may witness early polls with implementation of delimitation. If needed the Election Commission can have some special provisions under the election laws that can easen the delimitation procedures as prescribed under the election laws. BJP has been pressing for an early elections urging the Election Commission to take adequate measures for early conduct of elections. However Congress is not in favour of early elections. EC's decision on holding polls will take place after its discussions with political parties, when the team visits Karnataka on March 4. --MP

The Railway Budget for 2008-09, presented by Raliway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav did not bring much good news to Karnataka. There are few new trains added and extended but most of them going outside Karnataka. Two tri weekly Garib raths, low fares AC trains were announced from Bangalore to Kochuvelli and yeshwanthpur to Puducherry. The Blore- Coimbatore Express have been extended to Eranakulam. Other extensions are Chennai-Blore Express to Prasanthi Nilayam, Solapur-Bagalkot Express to Gadag (to come into effect after guage conversion) , Dharwad-Gadag passenger extended to Bijapur. Bagalkot- Yeshwanthpur now running tri weekly have been increased to daily services. The Karnataka package also include induction of new trains between Bangalore- Machalipattanam that will operate tri weekly and another Yeshwanthpur- Jodhpur daily train. --MP
BJP to go against Governor

The Karnataka BJP unit is not happy with the functioning of the Governor Rameshwar Thakur in the State. The angry party leaders who criticised the Governor's actions also alleged that he was neglecting the state's development by not implementing the 2007-08 budget proposals of the JDS-BJP Government. "We will write to the President and the Prime Minister on the Governor's style of functioning. We will also chalk out state-wide agitation programmes against the Governor shortly," said BJP leader and former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. "Only 60 per cent of the outlay proposed in the budget has been achieved so far," he added. --MP
Blore techie arrested over terror links
Bangalore police has arrested an IT professional hailing from Kerala on grounds of alleged terror links. The software techie, a native from Kozhikode has an electrical engg degree and came to Bangaore 8 years ago. He is also allegedly an active member of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Police had arrested hom on Saturday and was remanded to the police custody till March 06. Police on questioning had claimed that the 32-year-old could be holding the key to cracking a dangerous terror web that has been operating with networks from Uttar Pradesh to Kerala. Meanwhile a team of police from Kerala will be reaching at Bangalore to investigate further on this. --MP

IT major Wipro Limited has announced the launch of its global service management centre (GSMC) in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The GSMC based at Kuala Lumpur is the compamy's latest addition to Wipro's multiple GSMCs spread across various countries. This centre would focus on the infrastructure and application management service requirements of customers across the ASEAN region through a remote service delivery model. Management of data centre, network, call centre technology, business service, managed security services and end user support services are the key areas that the center would provide support on. Besides this the center would also provide 24x7 multilingual technical support to its customers. --MP

The Bangalore franchise has picked international players like Jacques Kallis,Cameron White during Wednesday's great auction of the BCCI promoted Indian Premium League. South African player Jacques Kallis was purchased at $900,000 by the Vijaya Mallya owned Bangalore franchise. Karnataka's own and Test Team captain Anil Kumble was picked at $500,000 by Team Bangalore. Bangalore also won Cameron White of Australia at $500,000, Mark Boucher (South Africa) at $450,000, Indian players Saheer Khan at $450,000 and Wasim Jaffer at $150,000. --MP
BJP wants early elections

The BJP in Karnataka is in the favor of holding elections at the earliest. The party had also urged the Election Commission to hold the Assembly polls in the State before May 31 while implementing the Delimitation Commission recommendations. The party delegates led by Yashwant Sinha had submitted a memorandum indicating that it was against extension of President's Rule and sought for a revised poll schedule as per the new recommendations. "We have told the Election Commission that revision of the electoral rolls under the new delimitation exercise should not be made an excuse to extend President's Rule in Karnataka and elections should be held before May 31 under the new regime," said Mr. Sinha. --MP

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid will lead the Karnataka team in the forthcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy interstate cricket tournament. The trophy honoured after the Indian cricket player Vijay Samuel Hazare is an inter zonal cricket tournament which is limited overs match. The tourney will be held in Chennai from February 26 to March 3. C Raghu is named the vice Captain of the team. --MP
Assembly polls likely to be delayed

The assembly polls in Karnataka could be likely postponed beyond May as it could take more time to prepare the electoral rolls for the redrawn constituencies so as to implement the Delimitation Commission report. A formal notification favouring this need to be issued and approved and then the Election Commission has to to decide on the the poll dates. If Delimitation Commission report is to be implementedo fresh electoral rolls are to be prepared which many take another 4-6 months. This means the elections could be further delayed to November or later this year. --MP

Country's private carrier Air India will introduce non stop flights between the Silicon Valleys, Bangalore and San Francisco of US. The carrier will start direct flight services between the two cities in August this year. The flights will be operated by Boeing 777-300 aircraft. Apart from this Air India also plans to start flights to Texas(either Dallas or Houston) and Washington. Other airlines like Kingfisher airlines also had announced non stop flights to San Franciso from Bangalore. Air India currently flies one-stop services from India to Newark, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York JFK. --MP
Key man in IISc attack caught

The key man of the terror strike that conducted IISc attack in Bangalore in December 2005 has been caught. The breakthrough in the investigation happened with the arrest of three militants by the Uttarpradesh police on Saturday night. One of them has reportedly admitted of operating the terror strike in IISc campus in Bangalore which killed an IIT professor and injured 4 others. The militants are involved with LeT group and was instructed to carry out the terror attacks at the key installations in India, places of national importance including the IISc. Police has also identified the man who opened fire at Prof Puri. --MP

The Indian Premier League (IPL) created by the the BCCI will have its opening Twenty20 match at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium. The inaugural match is scheduled on April 18th on which Bangalore side will take on Kolkata. The Bangalore city franchise owner is Vijay Mallya while that of Kolkatta is Bollywood's Sahrukh Khan. The IPL chairman and commissioner, Lalit Modi had said that the eight city franchise owners who include industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallya and Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta were introduced to venues, associations, marketing strategies, sponsors and promotional events. --MP

India's sensational tennis star Sania Mirza had opted out of Bangalore Open citing reasons of being dragged into controversies affecting her career. However soon after her decison to pull out of the tournament had evoked huge sypathetic responses from her fans and tennis faternity. But Sania had expressed that she was unlikely to reconsider the decision. But she maintained that said she would do duty for India whenever selected. "This is the first time in my career, when I have not entered an international tournament being played in India for genuine personal reasons. I do not think I'm in the right frame of mind right now to do justice to myself or my abilities. If I was to play in this state, I believe I will be letting my fans down," she said. --MP

New Bengaluru Intnl airport from March 30

The new Bengaluru International Airport at Devanahalli will come into operation from March 30th midnight. With the official launch the new airport whiich is located 30kms from the City will then handle all the commercial flights that are currently operating out of the HAL airport. With this deadline all domestic and international flights scheduled to arrive on 29th March after 8pm will probably land at the new airport. As many as 25 flight landings are expected to be handled by the airport before March 30th morning. Similarly all departures after the 00:01 on 30th March will operate from the New Bengaluru International Airport with the first inaugural flight set to take off exactly at 29th midnight. --MP
Prez to launch Golden Chariot

Karnataka's luxury train Golden Chariot is finally being launched officially in Bangalore. President Prathiba Patil will flag off the train on February 2nd from Yeshwanthpur. This expensive train estimated at Rs 38 crore project connects Bangalore to Goa and is expected to bring in large revenues to the State. The train is scheduled to start its first commercial run from March 3rd. The project is a joint venture of Indian Railways and the Karnataka Government. The route covers Mysore, Hassan, Hampi, Gadag of Karnataka and connects to Goa. The ticket cost is roughly Rs 14000(US $ 325) for a day. Bookings will be open soon after the inauguration function. --MP
