Karnataka Assembly dissolved
Thursday, November 29, 2007

Bangalore, Nov 29 (ANI): The Karnataka Assembly has been dissolved, paving the way for fresh elections in the State.

According to Raj Bhavan sources, a presidential notification was issued dissolving the house on Wednesday night.

The proclamation was issued on the Union Cabinet recommendation.

Three advisers -- P P Prabhu, S Krishnakumar and P K H Tharakan are expected to take charge of their responsibilities today.

On November 20, President's rule was imposed in the State by the Union Cabinet for the second time in less than two months. The decision was taken following Governor Ramesh Thakur's report in the wake of the resignation of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Yeddyurappa resigned following a decision by the JD (S), a coalition partner of the BJP in the State, to oppose the confidence motion in the State Assembly, thereby foisting a minority status on the government within a week of Yeddyurappa taking oath.

On October 9, Central rule was imposed after the BJP had to withdraw its support from the coalition as the JD (S) failed to live up to its promise to hand over the power to Yeddyurappa as per an agreement reached between the two-parties twenty months ago. (ANI)

Australian Emu migrates to Karnataka
Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Bangalore, Nov.28 (ANI): The story of the Golden egg laying bird has been made a reality at a Manna farm at Geddalahalli area near Bangalore. Over 150 Emus, the largest birds of Australia, have been raised at this farm.

The successful breeding of Emus has showcased a new source of employment and prosperity for millions of farmers in the State. It is Karnataka's first and country's biggest farm of giant Emu birds.

"Emu breeding is the best way that our farmers can make money from. Over rupees 75,000 can be raised by breeding a pair of Emu birds. Besides, there is tax exemption on this income," says Dr. Loknath Singh, Manna farm owner.

Apart from the meat and expensive eggs, the oil extracted from the birds have great healing properties for arthritis, joint pains, blood pressure and skin problems. The oil extracted from Emu also has a huge export market, Singh said.

Emu is also the second largest extant bird in the world by height after the well-known ostrich. This Australian native can adapt itself to any environment and lays eggs which are a delicacy and expensive.

Male Emu incubates the eggs and takes care of the chicks for six months. The Emu farming is catching the attention of those farmers who are on the look out for alternatives.

The soft-feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 2 metre (6 foot) in height.

Emus can travel great distances at a fast, economical trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 50 km/h (30 mph) for some distance at a time. They are common over most of mainland Australia, although they avoid heavily populated areas, dense forests and arid areas.

Emu birds have small vestigial wings and a long neck and legs. Their ability to run at high speeds is due to their highly specialised pelvic limb musculature. Their feet have only three toes and a similarly reduced number of bones and associated foot muscles.

They have brown to grey-brown plumage of shaggy appearance; the shafts and the tips of the feathers are black.

Emus are largely solitary while they can form enormous flocks, this is an atypical social behaviour that arises from the common need to move towards food sources. (ANI) -AJ

Karnataka assembly likely to be dissolved today
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Bangalore, Nov 27 (ANI): The Karnataka Assembly is likely to be dissolved today as the Parliament has adopted resolution on imposing President's rule in the state.

The proclamation of bringing Karnataka under President's rule and keeping the Assembly under suspended animation to pave the way for dissolution of the House and fresh elections was moved by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in the Lok Sabha yesterday, which was passed by a voice vote.

On November 20, President's rule was imposed in the State by the Union Cabinet for the second time in less than two months. The decision was taken following Governor Rameshwar Thakur's report in the wake of resignation of BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa from the post of chief ministership.

Yeddyurappa resigned following JD (S), coalition partner of the BJP in the State, decided to oppose the confidence motion in the State Assembly, thereby turning the government into a minority within a week of his taking oath.

This was the second time the Central rule was imposed in the State.

On October 9, the Central rule was imposed after the BJP had to withdraw its support from the coalition as the JD (S) failed to live up to its promise to hand over the power to Yeddyurappa as per the agreement reached between the two-parties twenty months ago.

In the present State Assembly, the BJP has the highest number of legislators with 79 MLAs, followed by the Congress with 65 MLAs, which excludes the eight other members led by former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who broke away from the JD (S) to join the Congress.

Kumaraswamy led JD (S) has officially 57 members in the legislature, but its strength is down to 48 after Siddaramaiah's defection.

The smaller parties and independents only add to 17 in the 224-member Assembly. (ANI)

Hotmail creator Sabeer Bhatia offers alternative to Microsoft Office applications
Friday, November 23, 2007

Sydney, Nov.23 (ANI): Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia has decided to challenge American software giant Microsoft core 20 billion dollar office desktop business.

It maybe recalled that Microsoft purchased Bhatia's Hotmail for 400 million dollars a decade ago.

Now, according to The Australian, Bhatia has released a free online rival to the best selling Office suite of applications that will allow users to view, share and edit documents from any computer.

The Indian-born Stanford graduate said that Live Documents would pose a "significant" challenge to Microsoft's propriety software business, which eventually would be made redundant by the evolving Internet applications industry.

Office, bundling the Word word-processing, Excel spreadsheet and PowerPoint presentation tools, accounted for a third of Microsoft's total revenues last year. It is forecast to top 20 billion dollars this year.

"We are just a few years away from the end of the shrink-wrapped software business. By 2010, people will not be buying software. This is a significant challenge to a proportion of Microsoft's revenues," Bhatia was quoted, as saying.

InstaColl, a Bangalore-based company that is chaired by Mr Bhatia and backed by SoftBank's Bodhi Fund, developed the latest rival product.

He admitted that "a few million bucks" of Microsoft's payment from the sale of Hotmail went into its creation.

Designed to help consumers avoid expensive upgrades and to foster collaboration on a secure internet platform, Live Documents matches features found in Office 2007, the most recent version. It will be given away to individuals with 100MB of free data storage space per user.

Companies will pay for the system, either hosted remotely or on an internal server, at a discount to Microsoft's licensed technology. Aricent, an Indian software services group with 6,700 employees, is the first client.

Live Documents is similar to Google Apps, launched in February and used by companies including Proctor & Gamble, General Electric and Capgemini as a cheaper alternative to Microsoft.

However, Bhatia claims that his product is superior to Google's in its range and quality, most crucially because it mimics Office 2007. Most of Office's estimated 500 million customers have yet to upgrade from the 2003 version, while it is not available for Apple computers.

He said. "This will do for documents what Hotmail did for e-mail. Why spend $US400 on an upgrade when you can get it for free?"

Office 2007, the biggest advance in the system in ten years, took more than 2,000 Microsoft programmers three years to develop. Thirty-two software engineers in Bangalore, India's IT hub, took four years to break Microsoft's code so that they could replicate it online.

InstaColl said that it was not infringing copyright because of a legal ruling that concluded that it was not possible to patent the "look and feel" of a computer interface.

Microsoft itself was instrumental in setting the precedent. In 1994, it won a lawsuit brought by Apple for copying graphics from the Macintosh operating systems for use in Windows.

Microsoft has toyed with the idea of putting its word processing and spreadsheet applications online, but fears the cannibalisation of its core business. Instead it has focused on enhancing its desktop product with online extras.

The threat of free web-based applications is still nascent. Most of Office's sales are to companies buying licences in volume; about 40 per cent come from the sale of packaged software.

Bhatia and Jack Smith devised Hotmail, named after HTML, the language of the web, soon after leaving Apple in the mid1990s. Today it has more than 450 million users. (ANI)

Let there be elections in Karnataka, says Deve Gowda
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

New Delhi, Nov 20 (ANI): Janata Dal (Secular) chief Deve Gowda today said that his party was prepared for elections in Karnataka, where President's rule was imposed today for the second time in less than two months, and the State Assembly has been kept under suspended animation.

"I welcome it. Let there be elections," Gowda said at a press conference here, a day after his party decided to oppose the confidence motion on BJP-JD (S) coalition government in the State Assembly.

On the issue of power transfer to the BJP, Gowda said that the issue was discussed "on the streets", instead of being discussed among themselves.

At the same time, he refused to admit that there was lack of communication between the BJP and the JD (S) leadership.

Gowda stuck to the 12-point MoU sent to the BJP leaders, saying it was not to be taken lightly.

The BJP did not heed to the JD (S) demand of signing the 12-point MoU that would have led to the former parting away from the crucial portfolios in the next cabinet.

Hours after the Union Cabinet decided to impose President's rule in the State, and also place the State Assembly under suspended animation, President Pratibha Patil signed the proclamation bringing the State under Central rule.

However, it has been decided to dissolve the State Assembly when government approaches Parliament.

Earlier this morning, the Union Cabinet held a meeting at the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the ongoing political situation in the State after B S Yeddyurappa resigned as the Chief Minister on Monday.

The government will seek the approval of Parliament for imposition of Central rule in Karnataka and dissolution of the State Assembly at the "earliest opportunity," Union Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi said after the Cabinet meeting.

"We are coming back to Parliament both for approval of President's rule and dissolution of the House," he said.

The Cabinet reportedly accepted Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur's suggestions for President's rule, as there was no possibility of formation of any alternative government.

The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) met late last night where Manmohan Singh considered Thakur's report, but took no decision.

The Governor had sent his report to the Cabinet soon after Yeddyurappa resigned following J D (S), coalition partner of the BJP in the State, decided to oppose the confidence motion in the State Assembly, thereby turning the government into a minority.

This is the second time since October that the JD (S) has pulled the rug under the feat of the BJP.

A month ago, on October 7, the BJP had to withdraw its support from the coalition after the JD (S) failed to live up to its promise to hand over the power to Yeddyurappa as per the agreement reached between the two-parties twenty months ago.

Yeddyurappa yesterday said he was 'cheated' by the BJP leadership, not once but twice.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh termed the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) decision as a 'betrayal', and said that it was former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who decided to give them an 'unconditional' support for forming the next government in the State after President's rule was invoked in the State.

A shocked BJP in Delhi has given indication that the party is ready to face mid-term polls in the State, and would try to highlight the twice betrayal by the JD (S).

President's rule imposed in Karnataka for the second time

BJP senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said: "We want that the Assembly is dissolved immediately. Fresh elections should take place in Karnataka immediately, and I am sure BJP will win majority."

Yedyurappa resigns as Karnataka Chief Minister (Lead-Karnataka Political Crisis
Monday, November 19, 2007

Bangalore, Nov 19 (ANI): BS Yedyurappa on Monday evening resigned from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister, hours after coalition partner J D (S) announced to vote against the government in the crucial confidence motion in the Vidhan Soudha.

Yedyurappa, who had taken the oath as the Chief Minister of the State a week ago, submitted his resignation letter to Governor Rameshwar Thakur even before taking the floor test. After tendering his resignation, Yedyurappa said he was 'cheated' by the BJP leadership, not once but twice.

'Betrayed' twice by JD (S), angry BJP prepares for polls in Karnataka

Bangalore/New Delhi, Nov 19 (ANI): A week-old BJP-led coalition government in Karnataka suffered a major jolt after its coalition partner JD (S) decided to vote against the government in the non confidence motion in the Vidhan Soudha on Monday.

BJP president Rajnath Singh termed the JD (S) decision as a 'betrayal', and said that it was former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who decided to give them an 'unconditional' support for forming the next government in the State after President's rule was invoked in the State.

"After their assurances, the BJP was ready to form the government in Karnataka. I think the JD (S) has again betrayed BJP," Singh said.

Though Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has not tendered his resignation, it is more likely that he would tender his resignation only after the debate in the Assembly gets over by evening.

However, a shocked BJP in Delhi has given indication that the party is ready to face mid-term polls in the State, and would try to highlight the twice betrayal by the JD (S).

BJP-JD (S) power-sharing talks fail

Bangalore, Nov 18 (ANI): A day before the Bharatiya Janata Party-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government is scheduled to prove its majority in the Karnataka Assembly, the talks between newly appointed Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy over the 12-point MoU failed here today.

JD (S) chief H D Deve Gowda had told the BJP leadership that signing the MoU was a must for JD (S) support, and gave November 18 as the deadline for signing it.

The JDS has put off its decision whether to vote in favour of the Yedyyurappa government till Monday.

The BJP has reportedly rejected the JD (S) demand of signing the MoU, saying that it did not form the part of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

The latest development has cast a doubt on whether the JD (S) would support the BJP-led government in the State.

However, the BJP is sticking to the power sharing agreement reached between the two parties in 2006, and Yeddyurappa expressed confidence of winning the trust vote on Monday, after his meeting with Kumaraswamy,

Yeddyurappa refused to give the details of his talks with Kumaraswamy.

The JD (S) demands include, the post of Deputy Chief Minister to the JD (S) nominee, and portfolios of ministries in consultation with Kumaraswamy.

Further, the JD (S) has demanded portfolios of Mines and Geology and Urban Development, which have been rejected by Yeddyurappa.

He has also rejected JD (S) demand for non-induction of former minister and BJP leader B Sriramulu, who had filed a criminal complaint in August against Kumarswamy, into the Ministry.

Eighteen Ministers belonging to the coalition partner JD (S), including the deputy Chief Minister, are likely to take oath after the government wins a vote of confidence.

Yeddyurappa was sworn-in as Chief Minister of Karnataka on November 12, becoming the first BJP leader to head a government in south India.

Karnataka was placed under President's rule on October 9 and the state legislature was suspended after BJP and JD (S), which headed the coalition government, locked horns over power swap for the Chief Minister's post for the next 20 months.

The JD (S) made an about turn on transfer of power agreement, but a fortnight later patched up with the BJP, which staked claim to form the government on October 27.

The Union Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs took the decision to revoke President's rule in the state earlier this month. (ANI)

Yeddyurappa govt to seek vote of confidence today

Bangalore, Nov 19 (ANI): The B.S.Yeddyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Karnataka will seek a vote of confidence on the floor of the State Assembly here today.

The floor test assumes significance as the talks between Yeddyurappa and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy over the 12-point MoU failed on Sunday.

Janta Dal (Secular) (JD-S) chief H D Deve Gowda had told the BJP leadership that signing the MoU was a must for getting support of the JD (S).

With this, the JD(S) has put off its decision whether to vote in favour of the Yedyyurappa government till today.

The BJP has reportedly rejected the JD (S) demand of signing the MoU, saying it did not form the part of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

The latest development has cast a doubt on whether the JD (S) would support the BJP-led government in the State.

Yeddiyurappa meets PM; says Manmohan assured full support for development

New Delhi, Nov 16 (ANI): Newly appointed Karnataka Chief Minister B. S.Yeddiyurappa today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi.

Terming the meeting a "courtesy call," Yeddiyurappa told reporters that the Prime Minister assured him of full support of the Central Government in the development of Karnataka.

"He assured me in the development of Karnataka. He is going to give all support.  The Governor of Karnataka has summoned the assembly session on November 19. After winning the vote of confidence, I have told the Prime Minister that I would come and meet him," said Yeddiyurappa.

The Yeddiyurappa-led BJP- Janata Dal (Secular) government will prove its majority in the state assembly on Monday. Ahead of that, the coalition partners are all set to deliberate on a 'memorandum of understanding' outlining the guidelines to share power.

It is expected that the signing of the MoU will take place on Sunday.

Eighteen Ministers belonging to the coalition partner JD (S), including the deputy Chief Minister, will take oath after the government wins a vote of confidence.

Somebody make Gowda PM

New Delhi, Nov.16 (ANI):  What is Deve Gowda up to? Why is he silent? These are  two questions plaguing all of Karnataka and all those associated with Karnataka in New Delhi.

More so in the BJP offices at Ashoka Road. Somebody make him Prime Minister and move him to Race Course Road. He could cause lesser tumult than he does in Bangalore. The Silicon City then will have more billionaires than the measly four that Forbes listed out yesterday. Why even moffusil Pune has beaten the outsourcing Mecca of the world....it has five billionaires.

Karnataka deserves better. Poor Yedyurappa looks over his shoulder more times than even General Musharraf these days. And Yedyurappa doesn't have the Taliban after him. He only has the Gowda family. Did I say "only"? This family beats the Bush's...they simply don't go away. And they are, like the Bush family, simple people. Very simple. Remember Deve Gowda's famous boast of being "mannina maga" which translated means "son of the soil" and very loosely translated means "one who reduces all to soil" !

Arun Nehru in his column says one needs an astrologer to predict what Deve Gowda will do next. Indeed, even the stars are confused. So deep are the man's secrets. Quite naturally the BJP is in the dark like Gowda's own family. The day the BJP government was to be sworn in, I congratulated an old party hand, who was taken aback and replied "what are you congratulating me about? About Yediyappa"?  There is little the BJP can hope for if they can't even get the name of their only south Indian Chief Minister right. How do they hope to even match wits with the Machiavellian Kannadiga who has been told by astrologers that he will return to 7 RCR one day. (ANI)

JD-S and BJP to ink pact for running of Karnataka Government and coalition
Friday, November 16, 2007

Bangalore, Nov.15 (ANI): In what could be a first in Indian politics, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal-Secular in Karnataka are likely to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will outline guidelines for the sharing of power and for smooth running of a government.

According to a website report, the inking of the MoU has been mooted by the Janata Dal (Secular) to neutralise the BJP from hijacking the policies of the coalition that has been in existence for 20 months prior to the resignation of the Kumaraswamy ministry last month.

The signing of the pact is expected to take place on November 18, a day before Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa  seeks a vote of confidence for his coalition government on the floor of the State Assembly.

Former Prime Minister H.D.DeveGowda is said to be the architect of the contents of the 12-point MoU.

One of the points in the MoU has already been implemented with the swearing in of Yeddyurappa as chief minister.

A Deputy Chief Minister is likely to be announced on November 21 when the JD-S ministers join the ministry. (ANI)

Haneef's lawyers to provide fresh evidence

Melbourne, Nov 15 (ANI): Lawyers for Indian born doctor Mohamed Haneef are hoping to present fresh evidence after the Howard Government launched its appeal against a Federal Court decision to reinstate Haneef's work visa.

Emails obtained by The Australian earlier this month suggested that the government and the Australian Federal Police had colluded to have Dr Haneef's visa revoked after he was granted bail by a Brisbane Magistrate on terrorism related charges. The charges were later dropped.

Before today's hearing, Dr Haneef's solicitor, Peter Russo, told reporters he was confident Justice Spender's original ruling would be upheld.

Having his visa reinstated would allow the Indian-trained doctor, who is currently not working, to further his career, Russo said.

Stephen Keim SC, Haneef's lawyer, is expected to seek permission from three Federal Court judges later today to use the evidence - believed to be a series of potentially damaging government emails by Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews to block Dr Haneef's return to Australia.

The former Gold Coast Hospital registrar was sent out of the country in July on character grounds after Andrews ruled that Dr Haneef had been associated with people suspected of being involved in criminal activities.

But Justice Spender ruled that Andrews had applied the wrong legal test by cancelling the visa because of Dr Haneef's "association with" British terror suspects Sabeel and Kafeel Ahmed - his second cousins.

However, Justice Spender said that Andrews used the fact that Dr Haneef was a person of interest to British authorities and that he had been charged with an offence at the time of the cancellation, the decision would have been upheld in court.

Meanwhile, Solicitor General David Bennett QC, on behalf Andrews, told the Court that some aspects of immigration legislation was "fuzzy at the edges" and set a deliberately "low bar" to allow wide ministerial discretion.

He argued that Andrews had not been wrong to cancel Dr Haneef's visa because his association with the Ahmeds, one of whom has since died from injuries sustained in the Glasgow Airport blast, went beyond family ties or casual acquaintance.

"This isn't just an estranged second cousin on the other side of the world," Bennett added.

"This is something more than that," The Australian quoted Bennett, as saying.

The two legal teams were today greeted by a small group of protesters calling for justice for Dr Haneef outside the court.

Dr Haneef was charged with a terrorism-related offence in July, but the charge collapsed less than a fortnight later for lack of evidence.

He has since returned to Bangalore. (ANI)

Karnataka Chief Minister meets Lakshmi

Bangalore, Nov 15 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa met Lakshmi on Wednesday evening, days after she underwent a surgery to separate her 'parasitic conjoined twin'.

Yeddyurappa presented Lakshmi's father with a cheque of 100,000 rupees and applauded the doctors' efforts.

"Congratulations to Dr. Sharan Patil and his team of doctors for this humanitarian act. Baby Lakshmi is back to normal and it's a sort of rebirth. Sparsh Hospital, Dr. Sharan Patil and his dedicated team of doctors have done the state, the country, and also Bangalore city proud," he said.

Lakshmi, a two-year-old girl, on Tuesday made her first public appearance after undergoing the surgery.

A team of around 30 medics removed what amounted to Lakshmi Tatma's headless identical twin sister who was joined at the pelvis and who did not develop and separate properly in the womb -- an extremely rare case, in a risky operation that began on November 6.

Lakshmi, who was born with four arms, four legs and extra internal organs, was expected to be in the operating theatre for 40 hours, but the surgery was over within 27 hours.

Besides the removal of the extra limbs, Lakshmi's deformed pelvis and spine were also corrected and her redundant extra organs were removed, doctors said.

Doctors said the surgery was worth the risk, saying that Lakshmi, who could not walk on her deformed limbs, would have otherwise had little chance of living past adolescence.

The operation is considered extremely complicated and rare in the country's medical history.

Lakshmi's parents, who are poor labourers hailing from Bihar, are not financially strong to bear the surgery cost. They told newspapers that they had refused offers from circus owners to buy their daughter.

The hospital said it was covering the cost of the surgery. (ANI)

Bangalore, Nov 10 (ANI): Lakshmi, a two-year-old girl, who underwent a surgery to separate her 'parasitic conjoined twin', today recognised her parents, which suggests that her sensory organs are functioning normally. "She was able to recognise her parents, Shambhu and Poonam, when they were allowed to meet her in the intensive care unit (ICU). She also waved to the doctors," chief anaesthetist Yohannan John said. He further said that Lakshmi's body is responding to drugs being administered to stabilise her. "Though she is on liquid diet and is being fed intravenously, she is able to sip water orally. Her body is also responding to the drugs being administered to stabilise her condition and prevent any infection," John added.

Lakshmi was born with four arms, four legs and extra internal organs. A team of around 30 medicos had removed what amounted to Lakshmi's headless identical twin sister who was joined at the pelvis and who did not develop and separate properly in the womb. The long and risky operation began on Tuesday. Lakshmi was expected to be in the operating theatre for 40 hours, but the surgery was over within 27 hours. Doctors said the surgery was worth the risk, saying that Lakshmi, who could not walk on her deformed limbs, would have otherwise little chance of living past adolescence. The operation is considered extremely complicated and rare in the medical history of the country. (ANI)

Cabinet decides to revoke President's rule in Karnataka
Thursday, November 8, 2007

New Delhi, Nov 8 (ANI): The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to revoke President's rule in Karnataka, and it is likely that the month-long political crisis in the state may now come to an end with the formation of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata Dal (Secular) (JD-S) coalition government.

The President's rule was imposed in the State on October 9 after BJP withdrew support from its coalition with the JD (S) due to differences over transfer of Chief Ministership as per the power-sharing agreement.

Three weeks after a bitter public spat, both parties came together deciding to form the next coalition in the State under B S Yediyurappa's leadership.

On Monday night, the BJP-JD(S) alliance paraded 125 MLAs before President Pratibha Patil, who were led by Yeddiyurappa.

Forty-five JD (S) and 80 BJP MLAs met Patil to demonstrate their right to be called to form a coalition government in Karnataka.

Chief Ministerial candidate Yeddyurappa and former Chief Minister and JD (S) leader H D Kumaraswamy together conveyed to the President that the combine has majority in the State Assembly.

Senior BJP leaders Venkaiah Naidu and Yashwant Sinha accompanied the group.

Four JDS MLAs -- H D Revanna, Merajuddin Patel, B C Patil and Putte Gowda -- stayed away citing personal reasons.

On October 29, both the BJP and the JD (S) paraded 129 MLAs in front of Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur.

Earlier, Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur had submitted his report on the political situation in the State to the Union Home Ministry. (ANI)

Bangalore doctors successfully complete 40-hour-long surgery on child
Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Bangalore, Nov 7 (ANI): Lakshmi, a two-year-old girl with eight limbs, has successfully come out of a 40-hour long complicated surgery that separated her from her 'parasitic conjoined twin'.

A team of over 30 neurosurgeons successfully operated on Lakshmi's fused spine.

"The surgery has been successful and Lakshmi is stable," said a doctor at the Sparsh Hospital here.

Lakshmi, who is presently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, is under observation for a few more days.

Her parents are being provided with updates and do hope their daughter will lead a normal life like other children.

Laxmi's parents received help from Sharan Patil, a doctor in Bangalore, who agreed to operate on the child free of cost.

A team of 36 doctors, including 16 specialists, began the operation on Tuesday morning.

Laxmi is a case of an Ischiopagus Tetrapus, or twin joined at the pelvis.

The incidence of such conjoined twins is one in 50,000.

Dr. Patil said the head of the other twin was missing, which made it a parasite.

Doctors faced the challenge of removing the parasite from Laxmi's body.

Laxmi was born to a poor family in a small village in Bihar's Araria District.

Villagers initially considered her an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi, but after sometime realised she was unwell and needed help. (ANI)

Governor briefs Shivraj Patil about Karnataka situation

AA: New Delhi, Nov 6 (ANI): Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur today met
Home Minister Shivraj Patil and briefed him about the political situation in
the State.

Thakur, who arrived here with his "final report" on Karnataka, informed him
about the political developments taking place in the state after October 31,
when he submitted his comprehensive status report to the Centre.

The BJP has been critical of Thakur for not inviting Yediyurappa to form the
government.

Later, the Governor left to attend the Fourth International Conference on
Federalism, which commenced in the Capital on Monday.

The meeting was held ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Janata
Dal-Secular (JD-S) legislators meeting with President Pratibha Patil today
at 6.00 p.m.

BJP-JD(S) legislators will parade themselves before President this evening
to demonstrate their right to be called to form a coalition government in
Karnataka.

BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa will lead 128 MLAs of both parties, who arrived
here last night by a chartered flight.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and JD-S leader H D Kumaraswamy, has told
reporters in Mysore that his party MLAs would join the BJP and present
themselves before the President.

Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur has also arrived here and is expected to
apprise the Central government about the political situation in Karnataka.

The BJP has been critical of Thakur for not inviting Yediyurappa to form the
government.

According to sources, the Governor has outlined the chronology of events
since the fall of the JDS-BJP Government headed by H D Kumaraswamy.

The various antics adopted by the BJP to pressurise the Governor for
inviting it to form government, besides the opinion of legal and
constitutional experts on the BJP's claim to form the government, have been
mentioned in Thakur's report.

Newspaper cuttings and Congress letters to the Governor, have also been
appended to the report.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan has said that a
BJP-JD(S) coalition would be "inherently unstable." It is an "unnatural
alliance," which was a "complete perversion and subversion of the
Constitutional process," she added.

President's Rule was imposed in the State on October 9 after the BJP
withdrew support from its coalition with the JD (S) due to differences over
the transfer of Chief Ministership as per the power-sharing agreement inked
in 2005.

Three weeks after a bitter public spat, both parties came together deciding
to form the next coalition in the State under B S Yediyurappa's leadership.

Dravid makes comeback bid with a double ton against Mumbai

AA: Mumbai, Nov 6 (ANI): Former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid today made a  strong comeback bid to the national cricket team by hitting a double century for  Karnataka in their Elite Division Group A Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai at  the Wankhede Stadium here.

His innings helped Karnataka to manage a draw and one point against  Mumbai after being bowled out for just 195 runs in the first innings.

Dravid's 214, which was his 50th first class three-figure score, came in  330 balls in 437 minutes. It included 21 fours and five sixes.

Dravid, who has been dropped for the first two one-day international  matches against Pakistan, said after the match that regular fall of wickets  didn't allow them to attack.

"We kept losing regular wickets, lot of players in our team are quite  young as well and it would have been a good education for them to play a quality  attack," he said.

"It is satisfying to have played a innings that helped the team. It would  have been better had I played a big knock in the first innings. To be honest 195  was never going to be enough, we needed at least 300 but credit to them. Ajit  got couple of wickets early and Ramesh bowled very well," said the 34-year-old  Karnataka player.

His today's innings is likely to get the attention of the national  selectors who are due to meet on Thursday at Mohali to pick the team for the  rest of three matches against visiting Pakistani team. (ANI)

Bangalore doctors start operating a two-year-old girl with eight limbs

Bangalore, Nov 6 (ANI): A two-year-old girl with eight limbs is  undergoing an over 40-hour long operation since Tuesday morning in Bangalore for  the rectification of the defect by birth due to the headless conjoined  twin.

Laxmi was born in a poor family in a small village in Bihar's Araria  District.

Villagers initially considered her as an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi,  but after sometime they realised that she is unwell.

Laxmi's parents, who could not afford the expensive surgery, received  help from Sharan Patil, a doctor in Bangalore, who agreed to operate on her free  of cost.

Laxmi is a case of an Ischiopagus Tetrapus conjoined twin joined at the  pelvis, thus having eight limbs.

The doctor says the head of the other twin is missing, which makes it  only a parasite.

Doctors faced the challenge of removing the parasite from Laxmi's body,  which could become even more complicated as she grows up.

"Unfortunately, we do not have a choice of waiting for the child to grow  older. The problem will become even more difficult to solve," Patil said,  adding: "The child's nourishment is becoming a problem and it is difficult for  the child to nourish this parasite, which is pretty huge,"

The operation is expected to take a maximum of 48 hours and the doctors  have prepared themselves for the ordeal.

"We do have long operations, but this is going to be extra long. We have  geared ourselves up," said Dr. Patil.

A team of 36 doctors, including 16 specialists, began the operation on  Tuesday morning.

Well aware that the operation has a 25 percent risk factor, and also that  of losing Laxmi's life, her parents find a solace that they are able to make the  best possible treatment available to their child.

"They are keen that their child goes through the surgery. They fully  appreciate that here is the risk of 25 per cent, maybe of losing Lakshmi. Not a  nice thing to say, but that huge worry is in our mind as well as much as in the  parents' mind," said Dr. Patil.

"But, only way is to do our best and achieve the best for Laxmi,"  Dr.Patil added. (ANI)
