Karnataka grant minority status for Sikhs
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
Sikhs in Karnataka can now enjoy minority status. The move was made by the government as to extend benefits to the community under the Prime Minister's new 15-point programme for minorities.
Besides Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh also had granted the minority status to the Sikh religious community. "The Sikh population in the state is small, the minority status will help poor members educationally. It will especially help Sikhligar and Banjara Sikhs, most of who are below poverty line." said an official. --MP
