BJP set to head a State government for first time in South India
Sunday, November 11, 2007

Bangalore, Nov 10 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to form the next government in Karnataka, a first for the party in South India, with the support of Janata Dal-Secular on Monday.

The swearing in ceremony of BJP's chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa will be held at 12 noon.

BJP national leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani, party President Rajnath Singh, M Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, are likely to be present at the swearing-in ceremony in Bangalore.

Besides Yeddyurappa, a nominee for the Deputy Chief Ministership, who is to be chosen by the JD (S), will also take oath, sources said.

A final decision on Deputy Chief Minister is expected during the JD (S) Legislature party meet on Sunday.

While former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has emerged as the frontrunner for the deputy chief ministership, names of Kumaraswamy's elder brother H D Revanna, and JD (S) state unit President Merajuddin Patel were also doing the rounds.

The Yeddyurappa-led Ministry will be expanded in consultation with JDS leaders after the BJP-JD (S) combine proves its majority on the floor of the assembly.

The date for floor test is likely to be announced by Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Sunday.

On Friday, Governor invited Yeddyurappa, who has been elected BJP-JD (S) joint legislature party leader, to form the government.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday decided to revoke President's rule in Karnataka and revive the Assembly, which had been kept under suspended animation.

The President's rule was imposed in the State on October 9 after BJP withdrew its support from its coalition with the JD (S) due to differences over transfer of Chief Ministership as per the power-sharing agreement.

Three weeks after a bitter public spat, both parties came together deciding to form the next coalition in the State under B S Yeddyurappa's leadership. (ANI) --MP
